Speakers For Difficult Room/Location

My room is 28x20 with cathedral ceiling and the system will be in a corner. I have very limited options for speaker placement and wife wants something unobtrusive. Wall mounts won't look very good given my possible locations. I want to start with just the stereo for now a later add ht. I'm thinking smaller bookshelf type speakers on pedestals and a good sub (sub will go in corner behind system). Do to tough placement options I'm looking for speakers that are the least position sensitive (if that is possible). Budget is $1,000 for speaker system including sub. I like listening to all types of music and want flat response true reproduction. Looks will be important (WAF), hoping to find some sharp looking speakers and slim clean pedestals.

These will probably fail your WAF test, but just thought I'd throw them in anyways since you say you want "flat response true reproduction"---click on the "Measurements" link on the left of the page for detailed graphs:

Unfortunately the 170s are rear-ported which means you can't place them flush up against a wall. Nice speaker stands like these will pretty them up somewhat though:

Since it's such a huge room, I'd get the best sub you can afford within your budget:

Interesting post. I have a 21' x 32' great room with a 28' cathedral ceiling and am looking for a pair of bookshelf speakers (8-10' off hardwood floor) that not only have a high spousal unit acceptance factor (SUAF) but a relatively low price of admission (around $500/pair). No HT in this room, just for pure listening - mainly jazz, some classical and rock as well. Just began my speaker search - have received a few suggestions: Epos M5, Paradigm Studio/20, PSB Image B25, Wharfedale Diamond 9.1. Would be interested in other recommendations. For your needs, could couple with speaker stands.
