Okay maybe it doesn't belong here, but who has some good ones. On vinyl, cd, or dvd?
I went through SRV Live at Montreaux, and Eric Clapton Guitar fest(fabulous lineup, ok sound), and James Taylor at the Beacon(great sound, stupid video)
Kenny G. Live I didnt know how good this guy was until I seen him live, the man has some increadible pipes and the Cd wont dissapoint. The Rippingston Thats all these do is make live albums these guys are great.Eric Clapton,Dave Mathews what more can you say about these 2 guys great stuff.Shai Live, great male vocal group in the mold of Boyz to Men ,they also have one helluva band.
I came across Rush'exit stage left' on double vinyl...probably just big here, but very well recorded for a rock concert. I seem to recall Rush being pretty big in Texas in the 80's, 90's when I was there then.
Some new gizmo for recording, but it is still quite good.
Nuck: no offense but wasn't that Joe Jackson's "Is she really going out with him"? I also enjoy collecting dvd concerts but have been disappointed in audio quality. I find spots of brillance and god awful on the same dvds, can't figure it out! Several of my favoites include Corrs' Live in London, Dido Live, Doobies' Live at wolftrap. They are not reference quality but will give you a "taste". Good luck.
I was always disappointed in Hell freezes over, a couple of the tracks were good, I just didn't like the surround mix on this one. Sorry about correcting you; both Elvis C and Joe J are brilliant musicians. Both have some dvds too, but I have not ventured!
I second that one! I have never been a lauper fan, but each is entitled to their own opinions. If Chris says that it's good, I'll have to trust him, but will not verify!
I promise you, the Cyndi Lauper DVD is exceptional, and I was no giant fan before I saw it.
Another GREAT Stones DVD is The Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus; it was originally recorded in 1968, but was only released for the first time a few years back. it features;
Jethero Tull The Who A superband featuring John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Mitch Mitchell ...and The Rolling Stones debuting several songs from the yet un-released Beggars Banquet. It was also one of the last times Brian Jones was filmed playing before his untimely death less than a year later.
I would nominate the following: BBC Radio 1 in Concert by Streetwalkers One Live Badger by Badger Rust Never Sleeps by Neil Young Live from the Showboat by the Phil Woods Six (vinyl --- CD version is hacked to death) Livestock by Brand X Live Cream II by Cream (like it better than the first one)
Byron, I went to sleep with Neil as a kid. A thing of beauty, and a great disc, Thanks. My Christmas list is growing, but ChristopherM, I still cant get my head around Lauper. Trying.
C'mon, give us s'more! (christmas is coming) it's been a long year
"Even for a group that has already released literally hundreds of hours of live recordings, this is a milestone. This limited-edition (10,000 copies) 10-CD set must be regarded as the crowning achievement of the Dead's most adventurous musical period. These four concerts (February 27, 1969, through March 2, 1969) yielded the recordings that were used on the group's most magnificent psychedelic opus, Live/Dead (released in November 1969), and represent the apex of their improvisatory genius. Boasting four versions each of their late-'60s classics Dark Star, St. Stephen and The Eleven, plus favorites such as Alligator, Caution, Cosmic Charlie and others, the box captures the group right before they began a slow evolution toward the country musings of Workingman's Dead. Aside from being the most jaw-droppingly intense music to come out of San Francisco in the late '60s, the Dead's Fillmore West shows have some historical significance in the audio world: These were the first live 16-track recordings ever made. It helped that Ampex, which first developed the 16-track by converting a 2-inch video machine to an audio-only function, was based down the road a ways from San Francisco. Pacific Recording in San Mateo was the first local studio to take delivery of a 16-track, right when the Dead were in the thick of recording their third album, Aoxomoxoa, on 8-track. The Dead convinced Ampex to lease them a 16-track the third made to capture some of their live performances. And so Dead engineers Bob Matthews and Betty Cantor and a couple of beefy roadies maneuvered the 750-pound behemoth up the stairs of San Francisco's Fillmore West ballroom to record the band for a live album."
Initial release: Nov 2005 Grateful Dead Records A 10 CD box set of "every note" played at the four Fillmore West shows from February 27th to March 2nd, 1969. Promoted as "the most significant audio release yet to emerge from the Grateful Dead's vault." Mixed from the 16 track master tapes. Mastered in HDCD. 51 tracks, nearly 10 hours of music, 76 pages booklet. Limited edition release of 10,000 copies.
Out looking for Cyndi Lauper, weren't you! The Pickett one cannot be good sonically, has to be mono. I would think the audio would be really bad, noisy. Video quality?
My list now; Thelonious Monk w/John Coltrane Stones/ rock and roll circus Boz Skaggs Live GHLive Elvis Costello Live in Memphis Dave Matthews Live Kenny G Live(shudder, but should be good on the Emma's)quality, not content I think.
I saw the boz scaggs live on HDnet and it was really good, great musicians, pristine video. You'll enjoy this one. Kenny G, do you use the monitor with this one! Watching him has to be worse than listening, but the guy sells records and TAW seems to have good ears. I am seriuos about the Corrs, I am not a pop fan either, but watching Andrea is worth the cost alone, plus they do a great cover of Lennon's "Happy Xmas war is over". If you find it for 5 bucks get it, you won't be sorry.
Erika Badou live, and that new Aleshia Keys live,oh and Mary J. Blige live, all I need now is a Nora Jones live, and a Brian Culbertson Live and a Rick Braun live, and a Heather Headley live,i'd be happy for long time, and Whoa! a Fourplay live.now i,ll really be happy!
Good luck finding the GD Fillmore 10 CD Box set Nuck. Looks like it's a limited run of 10,000, pre-sold (& sold out), and has only been shipping for less than a week. They are selling on Ebay like hotcakes for between $400-$750!!! Ouch. They also released a smaller 3 CD set of the same material for mere mortals to purchase. I've heard neither but am eager to.
400-750$. Oy! No price too 'high' for a real dead-head, I suppose!

Hey Nuck: No one ever accused Jerry and the boys of not being capitalists. they had the best gig going: fly your private jets in, stay in the best hotels, act like hippies for 3-4 hours, go back to your hotel, fly away the next day. Meanwhile your fans live like "rats" and fork over massive amounts of cash to get high and watch you play. God Bless America.
Now they still profit, but 400 - 700 smackers (must be Canadian?), that's obscene.
I don't tend to buy live albums because I usually find them disappointing, but here's a choice few:
Antonio Forcione 'Live' (if you like acoustic guitar, you MUST have this album). CD only, but great music, beautifully recorded.
Al di Meola, Paco De Lucia, John McLaughlin, 'Friday Night in San Francisco'. Reissued on vinyl beautifully by Vivante, but the CD's ok if you have to.
Eric Clapton 'Unplugged'. I think the vinyl is better than the CD.
There's a DVD of the Cream concerts at the Royal Albert Hall earlier this year - very good indeed. Well produced, good sound, good vision.
DVD Roy Orbison Black and White Night with Jackson Brown, T.Bone Burnett, Elvis Costello, K.D. Lang, Bonnie Raitt, J.d. Souther, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, and Jennifer Warnes. Phenominal sound, especially in DTS. One of the first DTS Music DVD's put out.
I'll still say that if you like Jazz, Diana Krall's Live in Paris is THE recording to show off your system. It has a wonderful, righ, analog sound, but extremly detaied to the point that you can hear the dampers in the piano, and the saliva on her tongue.
The CD is a totally seductive experience, and one of my personal favorites.
she likes her as much as I do which is the best part!
my gf is as much as an audiophile as I am. Yesterday she was commenting to me that she hates it when people buy Bose without considering other options.
she is the type that would forgo a big screen tv for an elaborate hifi.
Did anyone verify the Cyndi Lauper DVD, it was on HDNet a while back. I'm not saying I'm a big fan, but she reworked some of her old pop hits into some very nice acoustic arangements. Great high res. video quality, it was a very fun show to watch.
Margie, the Paul Simon is indeed terific isn't it? Been meaning to get that one, but hasten to buy anything in December, just leave little notes here and there.
I heard that disc last is a store full of Linn and other stuff I cant afford, and it was fantastic.
Thanks for the reminder, another little note for the refrigerator!
OK, got a lot to look for, Im stuck here in Reno for the day, so I go shopping. If I find Cyndi Lauper cheap, Ill try.haha. I see visa card in my future, big used store nearby. Buy in bulk, discount, no?
just a couple to add, the allman brothers live at the beacon theater-eric clapton, cross roads guitar festival-roy orbison, black and white night=music for montserrat
Eagles HFO is great but the dts is a pain in the but to use and onhotel california the bass is a mess. i have it also on vhs (remember that) and on 2 channels it sounds better. unbelievable but true
common 52 posts and no METALLICA S&M DVD. who thought heavy metal and classical would sound so good together. for those who arent familiar with this dvd (or cd) its Metallica live with the San Francisco Symphony-really cool actually check it out.
actually if you like metallica, check out apocalyptica. its metallica on 4 cellos there is just something cool about cello headbangin. the picture quality is a bit lacking but the dvd is still good
