I have one JL 15W3v2-D4 and keep juggling dimension numbers for a sealed box design. JL suggests a Vb range of 1.5-2.5 cubic feet which is easily worked into my initial design, but I just read a few things about undesirable distortion if the correct (golden ratio) dimensions are not used. I also realize that there is an earlier post concerning a similar issue, but I would like to know for sure before I proceed in this case. My current dimensions are as follows:
19" x 11" x 19" for a total volume of just about 2.3 cubic feet. Now, the same (nearly) volume as filtered through the 'golden ratio'provides these measurements: 9.7" x 25.8" x 15.8725". Note: all as [depth x height x width]. First of all I don't even think the latter enclosure dimensions are suited for a 15" sub, and secondly is this at all an area of concern? With the volume at 2.3, my Qtc is about .88 which is good for me. I know the first design will in the least work, but will it be efficient and resonance free? Thank you for your help,
There have been plenty of decent sounding products designed without relying on the "Golden Ratio" numbers. Don't get hung up on a concept that has as many exceptions as proponents. Besides, with the dimensions you have to work with, try one of both and find out for yourself if one plan works better than another. That is how you learn and form ideas.
I would tell you construction skill is more important overall than the dimensions.
