I recently acquired a used Technics SL23 turntable, and am looking forward to connecting it to my Kenwood amplifier. Can someone tell me whether the SL23 contains an internal preamp ? Or must I buy an add-on ?
Trial and error my friend. First I would check if the plugs on the turntable are perhaps labelled "phono" (no pre-amp) or "RCA out" or "line out" (might have pre-amp).
If not (likely), then I would first connect the turnables plugs to the regular audio-in on the amplifier. If the sound is very quiet, then it has no pre-amp, and you should plug it into the phono jack. If it sounds loudly, then it does have a pre-amp.
I have the same table - you need a pre-amp unless your receiver has a PHONO jack on the back -- if not, the pre-amp connects the table with the AUX jack on your receiver - works fine for me..
