Need some receiver help-have Marantz SR5400

I currently have a Marantz SR5400 and just picked up some Monitor Audio S2's at a great price. They sound great, but the Marantz has a much harder time pushing them that the previous speakers I had.
Any suggestions?
Should I sell in an pick up something like a NAD receiver for a few hundred more or should I just add something like an external amp?

"They sound great, but the Marantz has a much harder time pushing them that the previous speakers I had. "

How are you gauging this? Is the Marantz getting hot? Is it not able to push it the new speakers to high volumes? Is there audible distortion?

Yes, the Marantz is much hotter and I have to turn the volume up much higher to reach the same volume level

How high do you have to turn it up? What are the individual channels set at?

For example to reach 70db on the RS sound meter the volume previously had to be around -28 on the receiver. Now it has to get to -18 or -20 to reach the 70db range

Patrick the Marantz pick up around -20 and then go really high from there. I doubt it is having any problem pushing small speakers.

I second Stof.

I usually had my 5400's volume at about -15 when watching DVDs, definitely no lower than -25.

Also can turn the individual channels up a bit as a gain.

I have them around -20 or -25 for music
with movies, it needs to be pushed to -10 to -8 to get the same leve.
And this only running 2.1

I agree with edster. That model doesnt have very much power, so I would think nothing of it. You should expect to crank that knob a long ways to get any decent volume.

ok thanks guys
so if this model doesnt have much power, whats a good step
a new receiver, or add an amp?

Patrick,
So long as you're getting enough volume, it shouldnt matter if the volume is at -8 instead of -20.

As long as it will produce enough volume for your taste, I wouldnt be concerned where the knob is on the dial providing it isnt waaay up in the +'s.

If the receiver isnt shutting itself off because of the heat, I wouldnt worry in the slightest.
