Various people have told me you should warn up your amp before serious use. Does this only apply for tube or valve amps or solid state amps aswell? How long should you warm it up?

Thanks for any help

Amps generally sound cleaner after they have "warmed up" for a period of time. How long is a function of your amp and your ears. Try at least 30 minutes.

Use it and listen to your music. It will warm up soon enough. There are other things to consider other than warming up an amp. It is not like an oven that you have to pre-heat.

Just enjoy:-)

like JV said. ANY electronic device is happier after it's given time to reach it's thermal stability point.

there are actually circuits in amps etc. that are designed to compensate for this effect. letting an amp warm up lowers the strain on these correction circuits.

i'm sure JV could explain it more technically.

If you can it would be best to keep it powered up all the time, but be careful with tubes, because they have shorter lifespan on the tubes, but even they sound better.

Tube power amplifiers especially sound better when left on 24/7. But, not all tube amps will have tubes that last for any length of time if you do that.
