Hi! Thinking of building some hifi speakers for myself, and I need to know what the best BIG (ie floor standing, 10"-18"!) speakers in the world (IYHO), two or three way, preferably based around scan speak drivers. I have recently started a job where I have access to wholesale speakers, which is great, and, according to most, scanspeak drivers are the best. I need a cabinet to use as a basis for some speakers I am going to build myself. Size and cost are not really an issue, as it will work out cheaper than buying the speakers themselves (hopefully!) Any advice or recomendations would be a great help!

If you need a few ideas, then have a look at the loudspeaker section on DiyAudio.com. See this search for ScanSpeak.

If you are a great woodworker, then these designs found from that search look promising -

ScanSpeak make very good drivers. Are they the best? Well that's a matter of opinion. :-)

This is a very nice ScanSpeak based design that I heard just 2 weeks ago. Big soundstage.

ScanSpeak drivers have been used in many successful designs. One driver that gives them serious competition is the Adire Extremis 6.8.
You want something big? Try this.

try visiting madisound.com. they have kit plans for alot of the drivers they carry which includes scan speak.

"best in the world" is purely subjective. i've read claims that those $1200 EACH! diamond diaphragm tweeters (forgot name... but they're at madisound) are "the best in the world. i think i saw them (or their cheaper titanium versions) on a high end speaker that was reviewd as unexciting.

everything in audio is a trade off. drama isn't necessarily the most accurate sound while extreme accuracy (eg. hacro amps) isn't very exciting.

the best speakers in the world vary from person to person as everyone has different audio priorities.

adire is regarded as an awesome value for the buck brand. too bad they only do foam surrounds *shudder* LOL

p.s. DIY is just fun. your speakers aren't just products you purchased... they're labors of love.

p.p.s. try looking into DIY forums. there's a whole subset of hi-fi fans that are harcore into building their own gear. there's even a magazine dedicated to the movement.

you might be able to pick the brains of people who have actual experience with scan speak DIYs.

there's a virtual cult around lowther and fostex full range drivers. LOL

ONLY foam surrounds? That's not accurate.
Quote:
"..exponential flared polypropylene cone, matching smooth-mount polypropylene dustcap, and butyl surround combination with hand-applied edge damping treatment on the rear.."

Nothing about foam there.

The Acapella WB looked nice, and complex to build as well, looks like fun?
