Saturday, August 13, 2005 - 02:17 GMT receiver's preouts go to pre-pro, pre-pro's outputs go to amp, main speakers go from amp. purpose: a separate pre-pro and amp usually has better SQ than an integrated amp and certainly more than just a standalone receiver. Pre-pro: processes the signal from various sources (CDP, DVD, cable, etc.) Amp: amplifies the signal to the speakers

Saturday, August 13, 2005 - 21:32 GMT but there's really no reason to have an AVR and a pre/pro. Some people (like me) use an AVR as a pre/pro, utilizing the AVR's signal processing but using an external amp for power.

Tuesday, August 16, 2005 - 02:53 GMT Yes I am serious... Why would you use both a receiver and a pre/pro in the same chain?

Tuesday, August 16, 2005 - 02:59 GMT huge improvement in SQ, in my experience. When I use my Marantz 5400 as a pre-pro the NAD amp I have hardly makes much difference. Of course if I had a $2000 receiver instead of a $600 one the gap might be a little narrower...

Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 14:05 GMT So why would you still use the Marantz 5400 if you had a pre/pro? I don't get it.

Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 03:48 GMT Because the NAD pre/pro and amp is 2-channel. I use the Marantz only for TV and movies. If I had multi-channel NAD separates the Marantz would probably be long gone by now...along with my wife too as soon as she saw the bill! LOL

Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 04:12 GMT Ah, so CD goes into pre/pro. Not into Marantz then into pre/pro. I see. Wasn't clear to me that's what you meant.

Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 04:16 GMT Actually, both: the optical cable goes from my CDP to the Marantz, and the analog to the pre/pro. I already had the optical cable before I got the NAD so I keep it plugged in just for the occasional A/B testing. The Marantz never could handle an analog signal from the CDP at moderate or above volumes without going into protect mode, for some reason.
