Unregistered guest | I need help from all you A/V guru's. I will be purchasing a 50" Samsung rear proj HDTV # 5067 and am trying to figure out what AVR would be right for all the surround sound stuff. I currently have an older YAMAHA "integrated" pro-logic receiver that has just been great but, now need to upgrade due to the technology of today. I will be hooking up to the existing speaker (5.1)configuration. I think (?) I would wish to stay with Yamaha unless anyone can convince me differant. Thanks, Ryder |

Bronze Member Username: Jet2001Post Number: 69 Registered: Mar-05 | sorry, I have to agree with Dale. There are so many quality AVR's out there, you need to find one that has the options you want, then listen to it. Without knowing your budget I'll throw out a few brand names: Denon, Harman Kardon, Marantz, Pioneer, Yamaha, Onkyo....the list goes on. |

Silver Member Username: Frank_abelaBerkshire UK Post Number: 701 Registered: Sep-04 | DWF The display technology is one thing; the audio technology is quite another. I don't know the Samsung per se, but typically, the speakers that come with a television are not particularly high quality. This is because the manufacturer knows it's the screen which sells and so they put all the effort and money into that. WHat's left over for the sound is usaully very little by comparison. Therefore, if you can do it, look to build a dedicated sound system to give you best results. Of course, if you don't have the financial means then you'll simply have to live with what you've got. Sound systems are a blend of components with various features. The three basic components are DVD player (or source), surround amplifier (often a receiver) and a speaker system usually in the form of 5 speakers and one subwoofer (called 5.1), but sometimes in 6.1 or 7.1 configurations - and rarely in multiple subwoofer configurations (5.2 or 7.2 for example). Each component in the chain is important. All DVD players are not alike, and the same goes for receivers and speakers. If you can find a specialist dealer to help you, he will be able to find out what your requirements are and what they may be in future. Then he can use this to identify the best combination of components for your situation. Regards, Frank. |

Remember one of the keys is to find a good specialist dealer, not a big box store. You pay just a little more for their expertise and it is worth it, and more. |
Anonymous | Can neither of you dumb@sses read? What's all this stupid sh1t about TV speakers. DWF made it perfectly clear in his post, when he typed: I will be hooking up to the existing speaker (5.1)configuration. THAT HE ALREADY HAS SPEAKERS. He just wanted some advice on an AVR. My God, it's like some of you idiots type stuff just to see your name on a computer screen. |

Silver Member Username: Frank_abelaBerkshire UK Post Number: 702 Registered: Sep-04 | Anonymous, Thankyou for popinting out my error so nicely and so eloquently. DWF, it may be helpful to know what speakers you have. Some combinations work better than others, as I said in my first (error-filled) post. Regards, Frank. |
Gold Member Username: ArtkAlbany, Oregon USA Post Number: 1362 Registered: Feb-05 | Frank it seems that you covered the whole system. The advice about where to buy is still valid. |

New member Username: Hallen1007Charlotte, North Carolina USA Post Number: 3 Registered: Jul-05 | For the price the Yamahas are really hammering the competion. I still prefer the Marantz receivers, but the Yammahs do get consideration. As for the Pioneer's, I had one when I was in college and their support was terrible. Can't go back to them. Get bit once shame on you, get bit twice shame on me. |

Silver Member Username: Joe_cOakwood, Ga Post Number: 769 Registered: Mar-05 | Yamaha ha ha ha! |
New member Username: SteelhrdPost Number: 3 Registered: Jul-05 | The only thing Paul and I agree about is yamaha. I did listening tests and helped some friends setup their hts with my limited knowledge. yamaha always came to the forefront when it came to ht and dsp.Movies have more life and realism. Music suffers because they tend to be underpowered. however i will be adding an emotiva amp pretty soon which should cure that |
