I've had a bare-bones Onkyo reciever for about 10 years that recently died on me, so I went out and got a Sony STR-DE598 to replace it. The problem is it just doesn't have nearly the same bass response as the Onkyo did. I'm just using 2 speakers and no subwoofer, but the old Onkyo had a "loudness" button that really boosted the bass & sounded great. My speakers are a mid-sized DCM tht really cranked out the bass hooked up to my Onkyo.
Since I'm a novice with this new Home Theater component, can anyone tell me if I'm doing something wrong? Or, is this reciever designed to be used with a subwoofer and not have good bass response in the L/R speakers? Any advice would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks!

Your first mistake is that you bought a Sony receiver. I would take it back and get an Onkyo receiver that has similar features like your old onkyo receiver plus the surround sound.
