I just purchased a new and very small, very hot receiver and am wondering if it's safe wattage wise to use my old speakers with the new receiver... I have 2 of those big dog coffin speakers which recommend a max 100 watts And two surround speakers of max 30 watts
Here's the relative stats of the receiver:
* How are watts determined? (in Stereo) : Over 20 to 20000Hz Frequency Range * How are watts determined? (Surround) : Over 20 to 20000Hz Frequency Range * How many Audio Line Inputs on Sony Receiver? : 4 * How many speakers are required for stereo? : 2 Speakers * How many speakers are required for surround? : 5 Speakers * How many Video Inputs on Sony Receiver? : 4 * How many watts per channel? (Center Surround) : 80 * How many watts per channel? (Front Surround) : 80 * How many watts per channel? (in Stereo) : 80 * How many watts per channel? (Rear Surround) : 80
I'm curious to know if my speakers and receiver will be fine if used together, or if i'll end up blowing something. Whadya think?
The most important factor is missing from your post. What are the ohm ratings of the speakers and receiver? Watt ratings are fairly unimportant unless you get the ohm ratings matched.
other thing missing is how overrated sony's wattage ratings are. you have more like 50 wpc. also sony does not do wattage ratings across the whole audio spectrum, they actually cheat.
I concur with diablo about impedence (your receiver must be able to drive the speakers if they are of lower than standard 8-ohms impendence), and you have nothing to worry about concerning Watts. Just don't push the speakers past the point where they no longer sound good!
