I was reading the Feb 2005 issue if HiFi Choice and came across their review of the Meridian 808i Signature CD Player as well as the Nain DVD5 and Arcam FMJ DV29. I found 1 thing in common among all those players: All of them are using ATAPI drives. Saw that 80wire IDE cable connecting the drive to the circuit board?
These days, computer CD/DVD drives are able to read data from the disc at amazing speeds w/o any loss of data. est of all, they are pretty tolerant to vibrations. Perhaps its due to this ability that manufacturers are using such drives for their players.
I believe dedicated CD transports will go the way of the dinosaur very soon.
