I would get an asus eee pc because it's solid state (meaning less likely for the hard drive to fail, they are similar to SD cards) and light. It won't have the capability to hold a lot but they are super light and you can always get a desktop to hold your music. I got a Dell for college but I don't have a decent desktop. And it was pink plus I worked for them so the discount was a factor.
I know when you're carrying it around though, it's a little heavy and I am super concerned about my data so an eee pc would be good for college usage IMO.
I am also currently in the process of choosing a laptop for college. My laptop suddenly broke down and I can't even figure out what's the matter, because it's almost new.
