Reliability of Laptop burners-can they handle it?

I have a Sony PCG-R505GL and it was purchased from someone who had "burning sessions" in which he would burn 3-5 CDs (It was the only CD burner he had at the time). When I bought it from him and since then, the optical drive gets abnormally hot and has trouble burning CDs.

Of course, it can be pinpointed to the guy abusing the drive, but the "burning sessions" would have been handled perfectly by a desktop.

Did I just get a crappy laptop, or are all laptops like this? Can they really handle burning of many CDs at one time or even over a period of time without failing? What will the reliability of a laptop burner be like ultimately?
