But, in a surround sound home theater setup, which would perform the best? Althought the logitech system does have its own decoders, so you could just bypass the sound card. Spec wise it seems like the logitech would be superior, but i have a feeling that the reciever setup would win based on the two diff technologies. Are powered sytems like this logitech not suited so well for home theatre because the design was based on people listening to them at a fairly close range? |

Anonymous | I did a lot of research on the same. PC based speakers, regardless of how much money you put, are no match for a component based system. If you are a PC freak you can put together a great sounding music system for a pretty cheap price. But if you are a discerning lestener, who would look at values in .0x, PC based setup is not for you. PC based setups lack definition (beyond a limit) and are not loud enough. Again, that depends on how loud is loud for you. It also depends on the room size and type. Depending on the size and the type of the ambient, you need amps and speakers of different capabilities and characteristics. Another factor is money. It totally depends on $$$ that you put into it. It may be good idea, however, to use PC as a preamp. But in that case, be sure to plug in the best sound card available. Otherwise, regadless of your amp and speakers, you will still be getting a mediocre sound quality. |

Anonymous | the Yamaha has a 6.5" sub the z5500 has a 10" sub you do the math super cheap HTIB (anything under 400 I'd say) is no better than a computer system, and in some cases worse. The only advantage is that the HTIB has more inputs than a MM system. to the previous poster: that was not the thread starter's question. it's about mm vs supercheap htib, not mm vs component. |

Anonymous | Sure PC speakers may offer great sound and usually low price compared to Home Theatre systems, but they aren't as upgradeable. What I mean is if you have a 5.1 HT amp, you can ditch the speakers that came with it and instead use almost any kind of speakers you want to with it and get great sound. |
