Have you tried reinstalling your drivers? Is this an integrated sound card or a daughter board add on?

Your best bet is to re-install the drivers (sometimes they become corrupted) then go from there.

What type of PC is it? Do you have any driver discs? If you really are not comfortable with doing this yourself you can potentially cause other hardware devices on your PC to malfunction if not done correctly. I suggest taking it to a technician (best buy or some place should do it for close to nothing if not free).

If it is that you are not getting sound from your CD ROM drive in the PC you can check that by plugging a pair of headphones or miniature ones into the front socket on the drive. Adjust the volume control next to the socket. That way you can tell if it is the CD ROM drive or the sound card where the problem is. Good luck.

Sound files in relation to the OS would still play though; it is very rare for an optical drive to break in such a short amount of time (2 years) unless the motor burned out.

To clarify: the "play" button on the front of the CD drive must be pressed and the headphones listened to with the CD drive volume control turned up. If there is still no sound in the headphones that means that the CD drive is faulty. A light on the front of the drive should blink if playing. Or are you trying to play MP3 files thru' a player program in your PC ?? CD's or MP3 (or similar)?? Which one or both??

When you say "No Sound" I assume you meant various windows indication sounds as well; look in your volume control is it enabled? If not your problem is driver/sound card oriented. Do you have any cats or other animals? Is your PC situated on the floor? Sometimes as dust and cat hair collects inside the PC this creates a "blanket" over the circuit board and can lead to heat damage and cause components and cards to fail; you may have just had some bum luck as well. Buy a cheap sound card from somewhere (under 30$) install it and see if it works; places like Staples will let you return hardware with no restocking fee.

the guy at staples told me that if my sound card was no good or burnt out that it would not say it was enable and in working mood. i remeber it saying that it was in working condition and enable.but i did find the reciept for the comp and to my surprise it is still under warranty.i still have like 3 months and then it expires, so i gusse i will gve it back to circuit city. do u think there is any way i could just exchange the comp for a nother comp?i really dont know about this sony one.

Well that's what I was trying to determine; is it a problem with your OS configuration or hardware related. You should bring it in and have it looked at since the help myself and anyone else on here is limited due to not having the PC in front of us. It could be as simple as something disabled or muted and it could also be more in depth (things regarding conflicts or hardware damage & malfunction).

An exchange is up to the manager at Circuit City; people have got a clean exchange but not w.o a conflict and some pushing with the manager! :-)

Got an old compaq and was swapping out the 3 1/2. Swapped it out and now I can't get any power? I know compaq has a lot of proprietary stuff on it, but could I have knocked out the power supply?

It may be a simple case of the sound card settings, in windows, being changed. You may want to go in and make sure key things like wave out are not muted.

Sorry to say Circut City or Best Buy is not the best place to get a PC. Your better to find a local computer Geek or store and let them build a system for you. When you take the thing back be prepared to stomp and cry alot then demand to talk to the store manager. They will try to convince you this is your fault and you should really upgrade instead of fixing this thing. They want to sell you a new system they will offer you a trade discount. You will end up paying more in the long run. Don't be suprised if your system is fixed and then fails right after the warranty expires. Some of those guys load the drivers and then load a timed task to unload the drivers after your warranty expires. They will then tell you that it was reccomended that you replace your PC and you didin't. They will tell you something like your power supply failed which fried your harddrive and blew out your ram chips and fried your modem which in turn blew out your viedeo card and dislodged your entire operating system. Even though I can't say for legal reasons that Circut City or Best Buys would pull that kind of stunt. I can say thier are more investigations of fraud agianst these companys than thier are agianst your Mom and Pop stores, however also consider that these stores do a greater volume of bussiness as a hole than your Mom and Pop stores do. You may get tech support at CC and BB but most of thier guys only know what they are taught to say. I deal with this stuff on a daily basis. You will find that 1 out of 10 techs at CC or BB knows what they are really talking about. Do like I did for my Home and Ofiice go to Wal-Mart and buy thier best HP system HP has good tech support but I have several friends who are PC Geeks and I had one of them tweak this thing up. Most of all use a high dollar surge and ups system to protest that thing such as Tripp-lite protection. Just like you wouldn't get caught in storm without personall protection. A surge can occur at any time of the day and of the year. These manufactures won't tell you this because they want to sell you more PC's. I use a couple of less expesive surge protectors before the Tripp-lite UPS surge and conditioner. The more the better. I manage a very large AV facilty and we use surge protection out the yen-yang. and have for several years. We have had direct hits on the building with no damage to our electronics. Blew up some cheap surge protecters. Your PC and Audio equipent should be cleaned every six months or more unplug the stuff and blow it out with canned air. You should also plan to replace your surge protection every few years thier is a thing called an MOV (Metel Oxide Veresister) that will burn up over time by surges. Thats why I use cheap ones before the expesive ones. I replace the cheap ones every year or two and the good one I have rebuilt every 5 to 10 years. Yes you can replace the MOV's. Dirt cause electronics to overheat and fail one thing to help keep the dirt down is to change your homes or office air filter for the heat and cooling once a month. Let that PC breath you wouldn't believe how many PC's I've seen with dirty laundry on them. If you have a friend who is a PC geek let him help you take care of the monster.

I just bought a HP A815N and have no sounds anywhere. Bought new 'active' speakers. Still no sound. I have checked all the trouble shooting deals and unchecked all mutes. Still no Sound. any suggestions? I called CC and they said to bring it in with my speakers, but that is 60 miles away. I am pretty sure, I just don't have something set up right, but can't think what else to check

Update your drivers people. Always do that first before anything.

hi guys..um..i really need help. i've never used a forum or message board so this is my first time. i had a really stupid problem happen to me. i wanted to record my electric guitar to my computer so i plugged in my guitar to my amplifier. the amplifier has an ext. speaker output. it's a 1/4th in output, so i used a 1/4th connector, then plugged in a 1/8th cord onto the connector and plugged in the other end of the chord to my computer. except i plugged it into the wrong jack, the headphone jack. the moment i turned up the volume and played my guitar, i heard a popping sound and my screen went black. (this is a dell laptop btw) i restarted my computer and everything is fine except now i can't hear any sounds at all. i've checked all mutes and tried different sound file formats, i checked my sigmatel c-major audio sound card status and it says it's ok. but it smells burnt near the headphone jacks. my guess is that i burnt my sound card for trying to input into the headphone jack, but i'm not sure. what could be wrong? if it's a burnt soundcard how much would a decent one cost and how could i replace mine? (if it's not hard, i'd like to do it myself, limited budget)

If your system can take it without damage, you might want to look into the cleaners they use for cleaning out corroded radiators in cars.
