So with 1000 bucks, what I want is 2 12"s, box, Amp (preferably class D?), deck (w/ sub out), and installation. I listen to reggae, rap, and punk/alternative, and I want even matched SQ and SPL. I recommend an Adire Audio Brahma ($379 shipped) or Resonant Engineering X.X.X. 12" ($405+shipping). And yes, it'll hit harder than most of the subs mentioned above, plus the SQ is better. 2.5 cu ft. ported tuned to 35 hz for the X.X.X., 3 cu ft tuned to 35 for the Brahma. Then, a good 800W RMS mono amp would push either very well, I'd do something like an MTX 801D. As far as head units, I'd just look around and see what feels and sounds best to you, the ergonomics are very important and that is hard to recommend for you.
