Those can get loud and the square shape helps with that but sound quality wise they have always have been pretty bad and they need rather large boxes to function properly.
For SQL look for image dyinamics, ascendant audio, Fi, SSA, JL audio W7 to name a few.
For Sound quality only you can look for DLS, focal, morel, Hertz, diamond audio, JL audio W6, these are all still alive Im sure.
