Maxxx Unregistered guest | i want to replace my factory 6.5's upfront with some nice co-axials with good mid-bass. the reason i am not going for components is the volumes i get now are enough for me just need a little quality feel which ofcourse a stock can't give. i have pioneer 6x9's and a ID MAX 12 in the back. i am looking for your exact words here MATT, whatever you say WILL be going in my car. range is around $150 for co-axials. MB Quart Discus DKD 116 6.5" i heard are not a bad option coming for $90 shipped. p.s i have profile amp not in use(i know it sucks), was thinking if you insist on going with the components probably i could use this amp. 150 watts RMS x 2 at 4 ohms 225 watts RMS x 2 at 2 ohms 4-ohm stable in bridged mode |

Almost everything else is a matter of crunching numbers and giving a nod (IMHO). Not to mention that there are fewer bozo posts in this board. The Discus line is lowest offered by MB Quart and I think you can do better for your money. Quick questions: 1. What's powering the rear 6x9s and what model are those? 2. What model is the Profile amp? 3. What kind of car is it? I'd really prefer to get something in line with the ID quality up front. -Matt |
Maxxx Unregistered guest | Sorry about the guru thing, its just that you seem to exhale in this speaker biz. anyways ... the rear 6x9s are Pioneer TS-A6980S and i'm running them off my HU which throws in 22x4W RMS(Kenwood KDC-Mp222). Profile CA600 is the amp i have in spare. Car is 96' Mitsubishi Galant. i would say its more like a basic upgrade from factory. i donot run my HU volume more than the half of the full volume, its half is my max. how about CDT cl-6x coming for around $45 shipped. whatever you suggest must have a good midbass response. thanks alot |

You've got a 165mm shallow (2" depth) in the door plus a 4T shallow (2") in the dash. That opens a lot of interesting possibilities. Although your budget doesn't really allow for it right now, bear in mind that you would eventually want to go to a 3-way setup (very easily). So I'll recommend you go ahead and get those CL-6x 6.5" components, and consider adding a 4" or 3.5" driver (on a 3-way crossover). That's a great price and a decent fit, leaving me little room to recommend anything else. BEFORE BUYING, measure the exact depth of your doors -- you may wind up having to cut the factory grill and surface-mount. Buy a set of Phoenix Gold TX0 crossover modules ($25 ea) or the CDT ES-300 ($100/pair) when you add the high-mids and you'll be set. Or, you can make a set for about $30 with Radio Shack parts (which will involve some math). The CDT CL-4s are about $60 a set, which is still feasible this time around. -Matt |

Would I just have to use mulitple crossovers? I have a very powerful amp to run my separates 250 watts per channel (what is the best way to curb the power going to my soon to be 3 way set up...setting the gain to zero?...adjusting my HU EQ?) so I want something that can handle around the 200 watt range. |

IMHO, your truly best bet would be to do the math and build 'em yourself. They're really not that complicated, and you can inexpensively play with how you want them tuned (rolloffs, etc.). Plus having passive xovers provides an extra measure of safety against clipping and bottoming-out. 3-Way crossovers are usually low-high, then mid-high split (i.e., two 2-ways in a chain). -Matt |
Maxxx Unregistered guest | thanks for the reply MATT... i cant get the CDT audio's CL-6x for $45 anymore so plan B... i can get it for $65 though(with warranty) .... if its the best option in that range then i will go with that.... i have already ordered dynamat for doors. i will go for a 3 way setup later on as you suggested... i never knew those little grills are used for speakers lol! anyways remember i am talking about coaxials now . and as said before whatever you say will be done! thanks |

Silver Member Username: MattlBolingbrook, Illinois USA Post Number: 260 Registered: Jun-04 | FYI, the CL-6X are going for $59 on thezeb.com; do realize that these may be 1/4" deeper than you want. Please measure that exact opening to be sure you won't be hitting the glass. Ideally, you'll Buy-It-Now ($100) on these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=58025&item=5711168205&rd= 1 More than worth the money and a guaranteed perfect fit. -Matt |
Maxxx Unregistered guest | Before i buy these speakers, i was just wondering if i could find any other info about them other then what he is saying .... one thing is these speakers came back in 1998 ... do you really think speakers 7 yrs old would be able to perform as how they do today ? and if this is the best option for the money(little bit over my limit). i mean i have no doubt on your speaker experiences but numero 7 is little upsetting. i can spend this amount if you seriously think its the best available option . thanks ! |

I requested the manual from Infinity, but I'm afraid it won't get here until after the auction's done. Here's the DUMAX results for 'em, though: http://www.diysubwoofers.org/misc/dumax/dmeasure.htm -Matt |
Maxxx Unregistered guest | hell! some other d!chead bought those infinity's uniplanes before my check cleared !!! damn !! matt sorry to bother you again but its time for another little favor for me....another little search ... thanks alot ! |

Silver Member Username: MattlBolingbrook, Illinois USA Post Number: 273 Registered: Jun-04 | Heh, I was afraid of that, particularly after we discussed it as much as we did here. Plenty of people are shopping for good, cheap shallow sets, and there aren't that many around. Okay, a few options: * Infinity 6002si ($61) http://www.techronics.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&product_id=420&af f=45847 * Clif Designs PX6.2 ($83) http://www.autotoys.com/x/catalog/65_CLIF_DESIGNS_PX62_SWIVEL_TWEETER_p_1030.htm l And for $80, you can pick up a Hifonics "Warrior Hawk" 50x2 amp; or troll eBay for a deal -- you CAN find better deals with your power range, but I'm not going to bother posting because they'll get bought (again). OR, you can look for setups like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=48598&item=5710679952&rd= 1 -Matt |
Maxxx Unregistered guest | Well, their are plenty of options for the infinitys 6002si and hopefully as you suggested they would be a good fit too... i havent heard about cliff designs if you say those are better than the infinitys and would be a nice fit too then i would just go for these. at the moment i am not thinking of getting any amp for the speakers .... i will get that in next couple of months.... for now just tell me a good fit and better quality (without an amp) in those 2 options . thanks! |
Silver Member Username: MattlBolingbrook, Illinois USA Post Number: 278 Registered: Jun-04 | Between those two, the Clifs are definitely better. I suggested the amp because your original budget was $150. I would rather you get an amp than run them off of an HU for too long; there's a much greater risk of popping the tweeters. So listen responsibly until you do get one. -Matt |
Maxxx Unregistered guest | I got infinity 6002i couldnt pass the deal, got it for $32 shipped! . just installed it today with dynamat extreme for doors. question is the speakers have very crisp highs even on 0 treble. the mid bass response is very weak compared to the rears, so basically without the sub, the midbass is from the rear pioneers... i mean is it suppose to be like that or somethings wrong somewhere? |
Silver Member Username: MattlBolingbrook, Illinois USA Post Number: 333 Registered: Jun-04 | First, verify that your + and - are wired correctly. Second, get the amp I suggested. You're underpowering those speakers by a little more than half RMS, which may not be enough to get those woofers moving. DO NOT turn the volume up to try to get them to move more! You will more than likely blow the tweeter. It happens once a week on this board... -Matt |
