New member Username: Not1337Post Number: 1 Registered: Jun-10 | Hey everybody, I'm new to subwoofers and I was wondering if anybody could tell me if what I'm buying is good or not. I don't have a lot of money right now so i'm trying to keep it low budget. I know this isn't the best setup or the highest quality but I hope it will work well. http://www.amazon.com/Atrend-E12D-12-Inch-Sealed-Boxes/dp/B0013MV7CY 2 of these http://www.amazon.com/Kenwood-KFC-W3011-1200-Watt-12-Inch-Subwoofer/dp/B000N2N24 http://www.amazon.com/Kenwood-KAC-9104D-1800-Watt-Capability-Amplifier/dp/B0014E 2PD6 |

New member Username: Not1337Post Number: 2 Registered: Jun-10 | My budget is probably around $400 for the whole setup, I'm looking for a good mix of spl and sq, any recommendations? |
Silver Member Username: RosrockMichigan Post Number: 268 Registered: Mar-09 | a custom ported box for 1 12 will cost 120-150. Are you ok with buying used or just want new. Are you looking for a mix of spl and sq or what? |
Silver Member Username: SkdooleyRoanoke, VA Usa Post Number: 789 Registered: Oct-09 | A buddy of mine's car's transmission went out and I believe he is going to be selling his system. It isnt much but its not awful and itll be affordable. He's got an Alpine type R in a pre fab box, running a TMA 500.1 at 2 ohms pushing 500 rms. The sub and box is in excellent shape. The amp works great but doesnt look as nice as the sub/box. You could do a ported enclosure and get a little more output from the sub easy. If you're interested I can get you guys in touch. He's also got brand new 4 gauge wire, fuses, etc. |
Silver Member Username: Sleste8Shelbyville, MI United States Post Number: 188 Registered: Mar-10 | are you looking for a head unit also? is there a budget for that aswell? |
Silver Member Username: SkdooleyRoanoke, VA Usa Post Number: 790 Registered: Oct-09 | Nevermind on that post.. I just called him and he traded for some stuff on craigslist.. FTL. |
New member Username: Not1337Post Number: 3 Registered: Jun-10 | @steve A head unit would be nice but i'll probably be getting that later. @shawn dooley, i'm just browsing right now so while i appreciate the offer unless he has a really low price i'm gunna have to say no thanks. I was looking at this http://www.db-r.com/sell/store2/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=234 It looks pretty nice maybe I'll just get one of those and a amp? |
Silver Member Username: RosrockMichigan Post Number: 270 Registered: Mar-09 | ur not gonna wanna get that. its only 300 rms FOR A 15??? whats ur budget for just the sub? also how much rms are u looking to run? 500?1000? |
New member Username: Not1337Post Number: 4 Registered: Jun-10 | Rosrock im not sure as you can see i'm not very good with this $hit haha, i just love bass. I'm not looking to rewire the whole car though |
Silver Member Username: RosrockMichigan Post Number: 271 Registered: Mar-09 | u wont have to ... speaking of wiring do u have 4 gauge amp kit already? |
Gold Member Username: Kyle_lowePost Number: 1122 Registered: Apr-06 | i dont know what rosrock is talking about. the quality of a subwoofer doesnt depend only on how much power it can handle. i met a guy who was pushing one of those 187's with 500 rms and it took it fine. IA is a quality company. i would consider that 187 if i were you. |
New member Username: Not1337Post Number: 5 Registered: Jun-10 | Yeah I saw a couple videos on youtube and it looks like it bangs rosrock, i don't have one yet but i'm just researching right now before I get everything. I might get this one does it look okay? http://www.amazon.com/DB-Link-PK4Z-Amplifier-Installation/dp/B000Q6DLTK |
Silver Member Username: RosrockMichigan Post Number: 275 Registered: Mar-09 | umm kyle... u just totally proved me right. "The quality of a subwoofer doesnt depend only on how much power it can handle" by then saying in your next sentence "i met a guy who was pushing one of those 187's with 500 rms". Now, you basically just ignored what you just said by talking about how someone gave it more power then the 300 rms... ur logic isnt making any sense. |
New member Username: Not1337Post Number: 6 Registered: Jun-10 | This guy likes it and hes pushing 700rms into a 12 http://www.caraudio.com/forum/subwoofer-speaker-reviews/360008-review-12-incrimi nator-audio-lethal-injection-sub.html |
Silver Member Username: RosrockMichigan Post Number: 276 Registered: Mar-09 | the above post link is to a lethal injection ..which is 600 rms. the 187 is 300 rms. big difference. that lethal injection looks like a solid choice though |
Gold Member Username: Kyle_lowePost Number: 1124 Registered: Apr-06 | no rosrock you are mistaken my point was simply that the sub is underrated and your statement of "ur not gonna wanna get that. its only 300 rms FOR A 15???" can be discredited. a subwoofer than can truly handle what it is rated, and more, is a sign of quality. i could have said what i was trying to a bit better but that in no way means that i was wrong about that 187 being nice. and rosrock, please refrain from giving advice to people. everyday you have a new thread asking things you dont know about and then turn around and try to give people advice on the same subject. i have really wanted to say that for a while and just kept brushing it off until now. |
Silver Member Username: RosrockMichigan Post Number: 277 Registered: Mar-09 | subs are rated RMS for a reason bud. If it got louder and would help the sub then the makers would state FIVE HUNDRED RMS. Now can it take 500? Maybe.... will it help it... most likely not since it says 300 rms.. which is for a reason. Also this guy can buy better stuff for the same price thats better... aka a sub with better output. HAHAHA KYLEEE SO FUNNY CHILL BROASKY |
Gold Member Username: Kyle_lowePost Number: 1125 Registered: Apr-06 | you are sure one to talk about what a subwoofer can take. you clipped the hell out of your icon. it is clear that you do not know how to properly power a subwoofer. add that on to the fact that you do not even know the basic anatomy of a subwoofer. remember in your recone thread you were thinking cannan said to glue the coil to the motor? if you even had the slightest idea, you would not have thought that was what he was saying. anyways, i have heard one of those 187's in person. very clean and loud. very good subwoofer for the money. rosrock, im going to go ahead and guess that you have not heard one of these in person (and if you say that you have, i am going to go ahead and assume that you are lying). how can you say that there is better for the money? |
Gold Member Username: Kyle_lowePost Number: 1126 Registered: Apr-06 | oh and i forgot. "Now can it take 500? Maybe.... will it help it... most likely not since it says 300 rms" that is a large increase in power. 66% actually. there will more than likely be an audible difference you can hear by ear. i have seen that it can take 500 with no problem. so if it is not going to hurt the subwoofer, then in this case yes, it will help improve the output of the subwoofer. |
Gold Member Username: Kyle_lowePost Number: 1127 Registered: Apr-06 | zack, sorry to hijack your thread with all of this. i apologize. as for the enclosure you posted, well you know it would not work with a single sub. when buying prefab i always say go sealed as long as the size is right for your subwoofer. prefab ported boxes are a whole different thing. the tuning frequency of prefab enclosures is generally way off from what you really want and there may be some work involved to correct this. prefab enclosures in general are not usually of very good quality but if you have to, i say go sealed. if you have the means to make your own box i would suggest that. |
New member Username: Not1337Post Number: 7 Registered: Jun-10 | I see, don't worry about the thread hijacking i'm learning from it haha. I'll probably make my own box since I have all summer to do so. So do you guys think this is a good deal? http://www.soundsolutionsaudio.com/store/products/12%22-Lethal-Injection-Series. html |
New member Username: Not1337Post Number: 8 Registered: Jun-10 | Should I get 2 ohm or 4 ohm? I'm leaning to 2 ohm because that means a cheaper amp right? |
New member Username: Not1337Post Number: 9 Registered: Jun-10 | this amp? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003KN2TN0 |
Silver Member Username: RosrockMichigan Post Number: 279 Registered: Mar-09 | ur gonna want a class d amp that does 600 RRRMMSSS dont worry about maximum, doesnt mean anything. its just to full ya. Get the dual 4 version so it goes down to 2 ohm... which most class d amps like |
New member Username: Not1337Post Number: 10 Registered: Jun-10 | That amp above does 700rms at 2 ohm |
Gold Member Username: Kyle_lowePost Number: 1128 Registered: Apr-06 | i would stick with the jbl |

Silver Member Username: RosrockMichigan Post Number: 285 Registered: Mar-09 | ur also gonna wanna get a custom ported box. Find a builder around ya.. and dont let him charge ya more then 120-150. 2.0-2.5cu ft |
Bronze Member Username: Not1337Post Number: 14 Registered: Jun-10 | Can't I just build one myself and wouldn't sealed be better? |
Silver Member Username: RosrockMichigan Post Number: 289 Registered: Mar-09 | sealed will help it sound a little better... but it wont be able to hit the lows nearly as well, or get as loud as it can. Most peeps go ported. its reccomended. but yea u could do sealed and see how it works out |
Gold Member Username: Kyle_lowePost Number: 1130 Registered: Apr-06 | it is not "recommended" to go ported. again rosrock shows that he doesnt know what he is talking about. the subwoofer will work just fine in either a sealed or ported enclosure as long as it is built to IA specifications. there are tradeoffs. ported enclosures generally have more output but less sound quality. it is up to you to decide what you want. enclosure size information can be found here. http://www.soundsolutionsaudio.com/forum/IA-Recommended-Enclosure-Sizing-t28822. html |
