smell of burned coils surround or tinsel lead separation check DCR to see if the coil(s) is/are good. give it a good mark I eyeball test. check terminals with a battery or gently push the cone to see if teh speaker travels smoothly without making any scratching noises, and to see that it's not frozen.
see if you can listen to it in an enclosure at typical listening volume.
