New member Username: GlowboxPost Number: 1 Registered: Feb-10 | I was planning on building a 4 cubic foot box tuned to around 30hz for my 12w7. I've heard that if you build a box too much bigger than manufactures recommendation it may be damaging. But JL recommends 1.75 and that seems way to small. Any input? |

New member Username: GlowboxPost Number: 2 Registered: Feb-10 | that wouldnt be too small and would i have decent output ant low notes? |
Platinum Member Username: InsearchofbassYork, Pennsylvania Post Number: 13517 Registered: Jun-04 | no not at all...go 2.25 tops |
Silver Member Username: Simple_smithLapeer, Michigan United States Post Number: 286 Registered: Dec-08 | 4 cubes is pretty damm big for a 12. I would think about 2.5 would be maxxed out |
New member Username: GlowboxPost Number: 3 Registered: Feb-10 | Ok thanks guys, think I'll do the 2.25 and what do you guys recomend as a frequency that will hit the low notes but no sacrifice too much output? |
Platinum Member Username: InsearchofbassYork, Pennsylvania Post Number: 13518 Registered: Jun-04 | the 2.25 is after sub displacement and port displacement |
Platinum Member Username: InsearchofbassYork, Pennsylvania Post Number: 13519 Registered: Jun-04 | go 2.50 and throw the sub and port in there...id go with a 32 hz port tune |
New member Username: GlowboxPost Number: 4 Registered: Feb-10 | So I'm using WinISD (not sure if you have used it but if u have,) and when i would put 2.5 for the cubic feet, does that take into count the driver and port volume? And u say 2.5 Cubic feet before driver displacement and port? |
Platinum Member Username: InsearchofbassYork, Pennsylvania Post Number: 13520 Registered: Jun-04 | when you use winisd type in 2.25 cf but build it to 2.50 to account for port and sub....use aero ports |
Platinum Member Username: InsearchofbassYork, Pennsylvania Post Number: 13521 Registered: Jun-04 | use two 3 inch aero ports 14.25 long each |
New member Username: GlowboxPost Number: 5 Registered: Feb-10 | Ok thank you so much, i really apreciate it. One last thing, Why aero port over slot, and where can i get an aero port? |
Platinum Member Username: InsearchofbassYork, Pennsylvania Post Number: 13522 Registered: Jun-04 | the aero ports take up less room and flow alot of air for their size http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=268-350 |
New member Username: GlowboxPost Number: 7 Registered: Feb-10 | and put them lenght-wase in the box, so if the sub was facing the trunk, the ports would be going out the left? And side by side? |
Platinum Member Username: InsearchofbassYork, Pennsylvania Post Number: 13523 Registered: Jun-04 | you can put them in the front or the side but try to give the ports at least 3 inches of breathing room from the wall inside the box |
New member Username: GlowboxPost Number: 8 Registered: Feb-10 | Ok so i'll be doing this friday already, ha ha, and just so i got this right. - 2.5 cubic feet w/o port and driver displacement - Im going to mount them by each other on the left side due to it giving them the most breathing room - And that should give me around 32hz? Again I can't thank you enough |
Platinum Member Username: InsearchofbassYork, Pennsylvania Post Number: 13525 Registered: Jun-04 | you are correct and you are quite welcome....let us know how it turns out |
New member Username: GlowboxPost Number: 9 Registered: Feb-10 | I will, I'll post some pictures when it's finished. Hopefully by Sunday! |
New member Username: GlowboxPost Number: 10 Registered: Feb-10 | Would would be the best position for the 2 aero ports? side by side? or across from each other? |
Platinum Member Username: InsearchofbassYork, Pennsylvania Post Number: 13559 Registered: Jun-04 | id go side by side |
Gold Member Username: The_image_dynamicSan Diego, California Post Number: 5635 Registered: Dec-06 | That's a little bigger than I would go because you lose a bit of that tightness and snap that the w7 is so great at. Maybe like 2.1-2.2ish. But 2.5 minus displacement will be pretty close. Say what you will about JL and their prices etc., but nobody here that has heard one, can deny that the 12W7 is one great SQ sub that can knock in the right config. |

Bronze Member Username: GlowboxPost Number: 11 Registered: Feb-10 | Finally finished the box and decided to go slot port to save money. This was my first ever box build and the only woodworking tool i had was a jigsaw haha. Comments welcome and the sound quality and low end is hugely improved from a smaller box Ultimate Electronics built. 2.5 cubic feet (not including port) tuned to 31 hz http://img2.pict.com/c9/b9/c0/3103537/0/800/port.jpg http://img2.pict.com/52/58/fa/3103538/0/800/portside.jpg http://img2.pict.com/d0/fb/c3/3103539/0/800/portfront.jpg http://img2.pict.com/d7/c0/a2/3103540/0/800/clamped.jpg http://img2.pict.com/8c/e8/78/3103541/0/800/finalfront.jpg http://img2.pict.com/58/48/6e/3103542/0/800/finalside.jpg http://img2.pict.com/18/21/c0/3103543/0/800/finalsub.jpg Sorry about the picture formats, I tried 7 sites and all the formats and nothin worked |
