i recently bought a used 12" alpine type r sub in a Q-Logic bandpass box. its powered by a jl audio amp and a small cap. ive read how bandpass isnt such a good idea, escpecially for these subs. could anyone further explain this, will my subs prematurley get worn from being in this box??
Bandpass boxes are very driver specific because you run into issues when the free air resonance of the woofer dictated by the sealed box conflicts with the resonant frequency of the ported box. What you basically get is a huge boost at whatever frequency the box peaks at. This gives the effect of a "one note" output, and depending on the driver used can be extremely annoying. It is also very stressful on a subwoofers glue joints and spider because the back pressure from the ported box fights against the forward movement of the sub and limits its excursion. The Type R is a heavy duty design and will be fine, but overall you would be much better off with a solid custom sealed box. R's are optimized for them and sound killer.
