Can someone explain exactly what a line out converter does and why it is necessary. I've searched the net and cant find an answer. I know you are supposed to use one when installing an aftermarket amp w/o a aftermarket HU, but a friend of mine just wired up a set of female rca jacks to his rear speaker wires and it works fine.

a line out converter takes the high level signal from the factory hu and converts it into a low level signal to go to the rca's on your amp

so if your Hu sent out a low level signal because it uses an amp that is not in the HU and you were to splice in female RCAs to the speaker wire before the amp, then that would be okay.

Splicing RCAs is almost always a bad idea. Use the LOC if using a stock HU. Connect it to the rear speaker wires.
