I currently have a 12 w7 mounted in a ported enclosure and i'm wanting to build a sealed box for it for better SQ. I was curious if the w7 is ok being mounted reverse, with the driver outside the box and the cone on the inside. i'm wanting to know if the sub will sound any different mounted standard or reversed and if it is safe to play a w7 this way. also how much displacement would you take into consideration for the cone? Thanks in advance :-)

is it even possible to reverse mount a W7? Doesn't the surround go all the way to the edge?

It can be done but is much more involved than reverse mounting most other subs. And not to mention it is a major pain in the azz!!! Most of the times that I have seen it done is the woofer is mounted to the front baffle of the box (before the front baffle is ever attached to the rest of the box), then the woofer/baffle is flipped over and screwed to the box. Also, I would not use glue on front baffle because if you ever blow the woofer the box will have to be destroyed to get the sub out. Just use plenty of screws and also some silicone on the inside to help seal it up. Yeah, its a pain.

This is the only pic I could find right off hand.

i found and read an old post on this site where someone said that JL did not design the w7 line to be mounted and played reverse mounted. is this true? would it hurt the sub. i saw on the one link posted here that reguardless of how a sub is mounted it will not make a difference in the output of the sub. however, if a sub is not designed for being mounted reverse it may not achieve its full potential. and yeah i figure it would be a pain to mount and i thought about not gluing the top of the box shut incase i ever wanted to dismount the sub for whatever reason. i just thought itd look cool and i havnt seen it done before, even though im sure it has been done plenty of times. would anyone have an idea of the displacement to consider of the cone when getting the area of the sealed box?
