i was talking to a guy at the local car audio store about MDF and wood that is lighter and stronger. he told me that baltic birch is better than MDF in about every way other than cost. has any one ever used it? is there any other wood that is better? i am trying to make a stronger box but trying to keep down on the weight

Strong and light dont mix.
Some other box making material to look at.
terpin light, like mdf,
1/2" fiberglass = 3/4 mdf
1/4 aluminum = 3/4 mdf
baltic birch 1/2 = 3/4 mdf

there is also a subfloor plywood that is resined that Ive seen used for spl boxes
I can find out in a few what it is , but try google.

aluminum??? i thought it would bend and flex more and wouldn't be to good for spl.

i might try some different kinda of wood or maybe aluminum if i can find it cheap. i am making a small box for my gf so if its nothing big with it.

i did just make a big box but i don't like how the port faces so i am doing it over

i guess most of the stuff i have messed with was really thin. i just always thought mdf held in vibrations better than metals.
i know aluminum is stronger as in breaking it but i thoguht it was easy to bend. i have a welder and scraps i could pull something like that togather. it would be different than any thing i have ever seen

Any metal will resonate heavily and has to be controlled by massive dampening. It can and has been done.

Baltic Birch is used in almost all high-end pro sound cabinets for a reason.
