What's with the Watts?

Anonymous
I have a 100 Watt CD Receiver, and want to change my speakers. A friend offered me 1 pair of 5x7 200 Watts speakers for the rear and 1 pair of 150w 5.25" Speakers for the front. Total is now 350 watts. Can this run off my CD receiver without needing an AMP? How does the stereo's watts affect the speaker's watts? Thanks

yea it will work i have a 10 and 12 running off mine now

It will work, but you won't be using all that the speakers can do. At least you can't blow them!

actually the head unit is probably 100W max which is 50W x 4 max, which means real power is about 11 watts x 4 RMS.

you can easily blow speakers with that small amount of power by turning the radio up too loudly, and causing the internal amplifier to clip, sending distortion to the speakers as well as DC voltage, which will toast a voice coil in short order.

the 5x7 and 5.25" speakers will be fine on the head unit, but don't try to power subs with it.
