Glasswolf did a post explaining what each parameter means, it's here. https://www.ecoustics.com/electronics/forum/car-audio/38500.html These will be listed under a sub's technical data. Big factors in SPL are surface area (Sd) and Xmax. For sound quality, it's good to have a low moving mass (Ms). BL is also a big parameter. The Drivers Q and resonances, and Cms affect the size enclosure the sub can go in. One he didn't list is inductance, it's a BIG one. Look for a sub with LOW inductance (Le). Inductance is a big factor in sound quality, which is a benefit in the Sound Quality of XBL^2 enabled drivers since their inductance is low(Found on Adire Audio Brahmas and Resonant Engineering subs.) It affects the responsiveness of the sub by a huge amount. An inductor stores energy in a magnetic field, but when the current changes direction (signal to change polarity, the sub changing directions, basically)it resists the change in current and creates a delay. This delay alters the response of the sub (or speaker) since it affects the movement of the cone. That's why tweeters tweet, woofers woof, and mids do their thing, because the added mass of the driver can't change as quickly as a smaller driver if the inductance is high. The problem is most manufacturers don't list inductance, so it's hard to tell, but you should look at charts of frequency response. |
