I was thinking about redesigning my box to gain a little more SPL. The box That I currently have is 37Wx16.5Hx19D. That box is tuned to about 35hz with a 5x15" slot port.
The box I was thinking about building would be the same dimensions only tuned to 37hz with 3 4" aero ports.
Keep in mind im not looking to make huge SPL gains with the new design, just enough to make it worth my time to build. My system as it is right now is almost as loud as I want it to be... I am trying to get louder without buying new subs and an amp.
Oh yeah. My subs are Alpine type-R 12s wih the Hifonics bxi1208D.
Let me know if you think the new design will be worth my time to build. Or if you have other suggestions on how to get a little bit louder I am open to ideas.
There will be a gain in SPL. And you will have more strength on your higher notes. It is worth a try. If you like it, great. If you don't, at least you still have another box that you can go back to.
There is actually alot of factors when it comes to the peak fequency. So far, my car has been loudest at 53hz. But your peak frequency will depend on even the smallest things, like the weather.
Im not really to sure what you're trying to say, but I cant just use 2 4" aeros, I wont have enough port area(I used a calc to check it). Im not sure what you mean about the saving the aero ports... I dont have aero ports right now if thats what you mean, I have a slotted box.
Kevin I just realized we never factored in your ports displacement on the old box. If your box was 37Wx16.5Hx19D external measurements your box was 5.39 cubic feet gross.
5.39 cf gross minus 1.59 for the port if it was 29 inches long 3.80 cubic feet minus aprox .20 for the subs 3.60 cubic feet net
So to make the box with about the same airspace and a port length of 12 inches each with two 4 inch aeros and a 37 hz tune make the box 3.93 cubic foot gross and drop the subs and ports in.
So your saying to make this box slightly smaller? Why dont I want to leave it the same size? Also I thought you said 7.75"long aeros? Where did 12 come from?
Also the subs are .071cuft so minus .142cuft for the subs.
ok make a box 4.14 cubic feet gross with two four inch aero ports 11 inches long each for a 37 hz port tune and drop the subs in. Make the box 35.00 wide x 15.5 high x 16.75 deep (external measurements) and that will give you the airspace you need and enough port clearance from the back wall.
its going to be harder it get it louder... as you may or may not know it takes 3dbs to recognize a difference for the specs you gave at the top it seems that your box is already well built.. what you can try doing is to 45 all the corners of your box, resin it so it doesnt flex and mayber flare your port. all those things should account for some reasonable gain, but theres no promises and with out a termlab theres no real way of actually telling if you got louder....you could always tune higher also, if your willing to sacrafice the lows....itll hit those higher frequencies a little bit harder....but in my opinion get more power or just keep your same system cuz a new box wouldnt be worth the trouble unless you improve on design and not just redesign to another frequency...hope this helped!!!!
im sure in some cases you can notice 1 db, but not in all situations as i have noticed in the past that 1 db difference really doesnt make to much of a difference especially in higher decibel level car audio system, from 145 to 146 in my opinion theres no difference audibly, but that was in my vehicle. Thanks for your input sean.
Yeah me and Sean got it on lock down. We'll find out the improvements, there should be a comp at my school with a TL in which I will use my current box. Over thanksgiving I will build the new box and then get that metered as soon as I find another comp, but the design we are putting together I am almost positive I will audibly notice a difference. Thanks for your input 2-Loud.
Make the box 36.75 wide x 15.5 high x 16.75 deep (external measurements) 4.35 cf gross with two 4 inch aero ports 11 inches long each adding in the other stuff youll be at a 37 hz port tune.
