Silver Member Username: ComerzPost Number: 122 Registered: Nov-07 | I am pretty sure i built my box wrong and was wondering if anyone knew a link to the specs on the box for an alpine type R 12" (Ported) thankx |
Silver Member Username: DuckaShelby Township, MI United States Post Number: 365 Registered: Jan-08 | I built mine a tad smaller than 4 cubic feet tuned to 35hz, for 2 type-r's(I would have gone 4 but couldnt fir it). For one type r use 2 cubic feet. Tuning is up to you sq, sql, or spl? And this is the calcualtor I used... http://www.reaudio.com/speaker_box/LPort_Box_Calc.html |
Silver Member Username: ComerzPost Number: 125 Registered: Nov-07 | well my local dealership told me my box was made wrong. He said that its somewhere up around 65hz, and that is why its loud but doesnt shake ur rear view mirror. I was wondering how do i tune my box to 35hz? and im going for Sound Quality mixed with SPL. mainly SPL |
Silver Member Username: DuckaShelby Township, MI United States Post Number: 368 Registered: Jan-08 | Just use that calculator I gave you. mess around with it till you get the right space inside and the right tuning. for sound quality w/spl (sql): I would tune somewhere around 35-38hz (the higher the louder the lower the more you will hit the lows) If you cant figre it out post your trunk dimensions and a tuning you would like and either me or someone else here will help you out. |

Silver Member Username: ComerzPost Number: 126 Registered: Nov-07 | Ok i did the calculations on the calculator and put in my box height, width, dpeth ect and it came back that it was tuned for 34hz. i dont get how though, its too oversized i think. Width- 31" height- 15" depth (top+Bottom)- 15" Port hole length- 2.5" does that sound wrong because i was told by two different people it was way off. |
Silver Member Username: DuckaShelby Township, MI United States Post Number: 374 Registered: Jan-08 | you designed it to be about 3.1 cubic feet. That is just a little big even after sub displacement, but shouldnt be that big of a deal(you might loose some sq but gain some spl). As far as the tuning goes: What size port are you going to use(diameter)? That will help us figure out the tuning to double check you. Also usually if you shorten the port length it ups the tuning. And one more thing, what frequency do you want it tuned to? |

Silver Member Username: ComerzPost Number: 135 Registered: Nov-07 | ok thx for all the help guys, one thing, whats before the displacement? :P |
Gold Member Username: Drant19DUB-C, TX Post Number: 1189 Registered: Aug-07 | everr subwoofer has a displacement, meaning the amount of space it takes away from the boxes internal volume. so before displacement means like before the sub is in. |
Silver Member Username: ComerzPost Number: 136 Registered: Nov-07 | o rite on that makes sense. Is there a calc that tells me how to tune it to 35hz im pretty sure your port size determines how to tune it is that right? |
Silver Member Username: DuckaShelby Township, MI United States Post Number: 385 Registered: Jan-08 | yes and here are some calcs http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/boxcalcs.asp http://www.carstereo.com/help/Articles.cfm?id=31 http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/rftech/box_wizard.asp |
Silver Member Username: ComerzPost Number: 137 Registered: Nov-07 | http://www.carstereo.com/help/Articles.cfm?id=31 Wow im really that stupid. Well i got most the info put on this calc and from what i got its telling me the vent length is 0. and for this calc : http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/boxcalcs.asp ^^^its asking me for port diametre, what would i put in there? so far i put in that i wanted it 2 cubic feet tuned at 35hz |
Silver Member Username: ComerzPost Number: 138 Registered: Nov-07 | lol disregard that second part of my last part, obviously if they are talking about diamtre its not what i should be looking at. But back to the first thing, the carstereo calc seemed really helpfull, i just must have put in something wrong in order for it to give me vent length- 0 .....or do i not even look at the vent length cuz mine is sloted? |
Silver Member Username: DuckaShelby Township, MI United States Post Number: 386 Registered: Jan-08 | Just use this calculator http://www.reaudio.com/speaker_box/LPort_Box_Calc.html And plug in these numbers: Width:30 Height:15 Top&Bottom depth:15 Wood thickness:0.75 Square port width:2.5 Square port length 2: 8 That will give you a great box for 1 12" type-r 2.524 cubic feet tuned to 35.212Hz If you want to change any of the dimensions or the tuning try and figure it out by messing with it. |
Silver Member Username: ComerzPost Number: 139 Registered: Nov-07 | k thx a lot for the help kev, My box is the same as what you put there accept its 31", i think what im going to do is cut about 3 inches off the width which will make it 2.3 cubic feet tuned at 36 (almost 37)hz, sound good? Going for SPL |
Silver Member Username: DuckaShelby Township, MI United States Post Number: 387 Registered: Jan-08 | yeah that sounds like it will hit real nice. That will be a pretty loud and still have a good amount of sq. |
Gold Member Username: Drant19DUB-C, TX Post Number: 1199 Registered: Aug-07 | if you want straight spl then i would definately tune higher |
Silver Member Username: DuckaShelby Township, MI United States Post Number: 389 Registered: Jan-08 | If im correct he just wants a loud daily driver. |
Silver Member Username: ComerzPost Number: 141 Registered: Nov-07 | yea I want loudness. But does making my box smaller to get more SPL mean my bass isnt going to be as deep or will it get deeper? Or is that all in the settings of the amp? |
Silver Member Username: DuckaShelby Township, MI United States Post Number: 391 Registered: Jan-08 | No and no. A larger box will in theory produce more spl... obviously there is a limit to how large. Making a larger box will make your bass less accurate(less sq). Im not positive but I think it should be deeper with a larger box, but usually how deep it gets depends on the sub and the tuning of the box. With the design you were thinking about using your system should be pretty loud with a decent amount of sq. I have 2 type-r's in a 3.8cuft box tuned to about 35hz. I love it. It kills the lows and is still pretty d@mn loud(dont know how loud exactly but I think there is going to be a comp by me near the end of the month and ill be sure to let everyone on here know what kind of numbers im getting). just go with the plans you posted last and im sure you'll be happy. Now get on with building already and put up pics of the build process and finished product. p.s. if you think you will want more spl then go with a 38hz tuning and it should still sound pretty decent on music(assuming you listen to rap). |
