the sub or components or whatever is being clipped normally just cut in and out. its not really a distinct sound, but you should know when it's happening.

From what I know/ have heard, clipping is when the bass goes past what the sub can handle and the sub just kind of playes a flat line at the peak of what it can handle. The best way I can describe what it sounds like is just bad... since bass is a sine wave it "clips" the peak of the wave off. From my experience it is prett difficult to tell unless it is clipping badly(it will sound very Sh1tty)

This is what clipping looks like.

The best way(IMO) to set the gain so that it does not clip is to use a multimeter and figure out how many volts should be produced for how many watts the system produces... My friend has a website that can calculate all of this for you, but unfortunately he is not online right now. I will get the link for you as soon as I can though.

Hope that this helps.

p.s. clipping is bad lol, but it sounds like you already know that.

I imagine a sub that was bottoming out really hard could clip but usually it's the amplifier that produces a clipped signal.

It sounds like:

Clip clip clip clip......

When it sounds like the signal is cut short or distorted you should stop. Some azzholes think this is music.

If you can find a shop with an oscilliscope they can help you actually look at the wave and make sure it has no clipping.

Kevin D put it in a nut shell I guess. Clipping will cause your subs to become warm or hot (or even mess them up) depending on the severety of the clipping, and can damage your amp as well.

There's so much more detail I really wish I could add in here to clarify what I'm saying, I'm just too tired tonight.
