Wednesday, April 16, 2008 - 23:22 GMT I have a 15 Q, and it's making a clangy noise whenever I play it loud. It sounds ok when it's played quiet, or loud on a higher note, but whenever it his something deep, it makes an awful clangy noise, kind of like someone dropped a coin or something on the cone. Any ideas?

Wednesday, April 16, 2008 - 23:28 GMT Sounds like tinsel slap or it could be hitting the back plate like Paul said. How much power are you giving it?

Wednesday, April 16, 2008 - 23:30 GMT Clangy tho? I would think tinsel slap would sound more like tapping or wapping or snapping or....... you get the idea.

Wednesday, April 16, 2008 - 23:40 GMT It's just an oval patch used to protect the cone from the tinsel leads that wap it. Softens the blow. Not a fix but more like a band aid.

Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 00:02 GMT I'd say contact cement but I'm not sure how it would react with the cone. Go to a fabric store and see what they have.

Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 00:11 GMT So I just played it in open air, and it doesnt look like tinsel slap (or at least what I understand tinsel slap to be). It seems to be coming from right underneath the Fi logo on the face of the sub. Ugh.

Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 00:39 GMT Ask yourself why it's bottoming out. Suspension too loose or damaged? Too many high powered low freqs? Gains set right? Bass boost off? If you've pushed it past its' design limits sending back won't help. Hows the spider look?

Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 15:52 GMT sometimes a subwoofer can get misaligned under alot of power or improper box or high thd by throwing the coil out of the gap. If this happens it will sound fine at low volume but the coil will rock or hit the side making a clanging noise. so if you checked the tinsel, and the dusp cap to make sure there are no air leaks thats most likely what you have. When you get a recone i would suggest a diffrent box, maybe a smaller port to control the subwoofer better. This would happen to single spider alphas when guys put like 2500 watts on them, thus leading us to offer a dual and single spider version.
