Why does a slot port have to be shorter to acheive the same tuning? whats the difference if i use the side of my box for the port vs just having a port right in the middle. is it only if you have bends or somthing?

it's not shorter, you just have to use L-bends if your sub box isn't deep enough. a side port utilizes no L-bends, usually

i was using this calculator today and it had an option for slot or not and the slot was about 2-3 inches shorter when calculated.

A slot-ports "usable" length is usually ~1/2 of its width longer than is actually is.

So, a 4" wide slot will 'act' like it is 2" longer than is physically is.

why tho? what is so much different about using the side of the box as opposed to having a port rigt in the middle of equal area.
