Gold Member Username: BlainewPost Number: 2797 Registered: Nov-05 | what is dy/dx of x^2+y^2=square root of 7 dy/dx of y^2 is 2x, but what is dy/dx of y^2??? and how do you solve this whole thing |
Gold Member Username: JtownTeam Revolution, Texas Post Number: 1652 Registered: Mar-07 | if I remember correctly 2x + 2y(dy/dx) = (1/2)7^-(1/2) or (7/2)^-(1/2) but it's been a while and that may be completely wrong |
Gold Member Username: BlainewPost Number: 2799 Registered: Nov-05 | nahhh haha thats wrong..kind of on the right track the regular rules of dy/dx only apply when x is your variable... when y is in there you do something different.. |
Gold Member Username: JtownTeam Revolution, Texas Post Number: 1655 Registered: Mar-07 | wish I had something to look at real quick, it would come back to me real quick, like riding a bike lol can you post a pic of the problem? don't you have a book or something? |

Platinum Member Username: WingmanaliveA pic is worth 1000 posts!! Post Number: 12440 Registered: Jun-06 | LOL. Why post a calculus question in this forum? LOLOLOL. You're all smarter than me. |
New member Username: Letstalksound2Post Number: 5 Registered: Nov-06 | dy/dx is a synonym for f'(x) so I think it's just asking for the derivative of the whole thing... therefore... f(x) = x^2+y^2= 7^ .5 f'(x) = 2x + 2y = .5 7^ -.5 (x^.5 = x^1/2 = square root x) hope this helps, and it correct would be helpful to see the book and know what context the question is in, i.e. what type of derivatives your working on. Try Cramster, it has pretty much all the odd problems worked out for alot of calc textbooks Good Luck |
Gold Member Username: JtownTeam Revolution, Texas Post Number: 1679 Registered: Mar-07 | ^d@mn, I was wrong with the "2y(dy/dx)" but what Mike Jones posted has to be right again, it would helpful to see an example or the book |

Gold Member Username: BlainewPost Number: 2805 Registered: Nov-05 | its really complicated to explain. And I am on my iPod right now so when I get to a computer I will explain the answer |
