New member Username: H20audioFort Lauderdale, FL United States Post Number: 1 Registered: Sep-07 | I'm searching for an amp to power a 10" sub on my boat. The trick is, I need something that will do a decent job driving the sub but not kill my batteries too quickly. We anchor out alot with the motors off so I'd like to be able to have music a long time without killing the batteries or having to constantly run the motors. I've got 2 Odyssey PC2150's that will supposedly run 25A for 205 minutes each (205 minutes reserve time). I'd like to get my amps power well under the 25A for more listening time. I only need 200W RMS for the sub. Any suggestions? Thanks! |

New member Username: H20audioFort Lauderdale, FL United States Post Number: 2 Registered: Sep-07 | That JL audio one might be a good choice. The sub is just a 10" bazooka for marine use, sm104 I think. So I believe it's a 4 ohm, but I'll be the first to admit mobile audio isn't my specialty! I was looking at class D amps, but I really don't understand how I would benefit from it. I roughly figured rms watts/voltage would give me an estimate of power consumption. How does it vary between an AB or D amp? Or does a D drive the sub better using less watts compared to an AB? See what I mean, I really don't know what all the differences are. I really appreciate the help though! Thanks! |
Bronze Member Username: Ques07Post Number: 20 Registered: Sep-07 | yeah... class ab's are usually only 66% efficient... and d's are 87% or something close... and from what i know they give out more per watt so yeah... but i'm no expert either i was just lookin for help not to long ago myself.. so if i'm wrong...someone correct me... |
Bronze Member Username: ThunderbPost Number: 28 Registered: Sep-07 | yeah a class d is the way to go, but trying to find a decent class d for marine use is very hard to do. Besides those amps are small enough they wont pull more than 25 amps. |

I'll be installing it down in the cabin so it'll be in a nice dry area. 25A will work, but that only gives me 405 minutes of run time. I'd like to get as low as possible to prolong my listening time. |

I don't know Planet Audio, but since you recommend them I assume they're good. At least good enough for me, anyway! I think I'm going to go with that one. I do have more questions though, as I'm really finding this interesting. Am I correct to think a class D 200W will drive a sub better than 200W AB? Also, with this Planet Audio 200W class D, will it ultimately use less power from my batteries to produce the same sound level as a 200W AB would? Anyway, I definitely think you've pointed me in the right direction. I might just buy that thing now. Thanks! |
Bronze Member Username: CrossfiredPost Number: 34 Registered: Mar-07 | You can find these used on Ebay for under $100. It's the best amp Pioneer ever made(IMO). I've installed about 20 of these and everyone was very happy and none came back. Really small with tons of power. 2076_310069933_64850147_tab=B%2C00.html?compName=PNA_V3_ProductDetailsComponent, http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/v3/pg/product/details/0,,2076_310069933_64 850147_tab=B,00.html?compName=PNA_V3_ProductDetailsComponent |
