I have a 12w7 in a ported box 1.75ft^2 @32hz. I am pushing it with an orion 1200d. so at 3ohms its prob getting 500-600w. it just doesnt seem loud compared to other setups I have had.I can turn the gain up and it is closer to where I think it should be but it is distorting? do I need to suck it up and buy a new amp?
im no expert on that sub but generally speaking thats cuft is kinda small for a 12" ,typical 12" is normally in a 2-2.5cuft sometimes more depending on what ur after ...but i suspect ur box maybe the problem here .....
Its in a toyota celica...well I had a bigger box designed...until I posted on here and was told that it needed to be smaller...would it be a good idea to get another 1200d and bridge them? Or should I buy a new amp?
just get a new amp. my friend put a kicker zx1500.1 on that thing and it sounds awesome. the zx1500.1 does 1500wrms at 2 ohms so it will still put out good power at 3ohms.
would but that box is really big... dont want to lose all my space...and I dont think that I would be able to close the hatch...I have a false floor that my amps are under...
David, it's all in the box design with 12W7. And yes, the HO box is quite big. For everyday use, I'd recommand 10W7 in a HO box. That sub with your amp should work well.
I would get a Hifonix Brutus 2000w class d amp it's around 600 bucks takes a beating and hits hard. make sure you have a cap.,at least 4 guage wire, and get the right box custom made for your car. also if you are using a factory head unit it will greatly decrease the performance of the sub and amp...you need a good min 4v output headunit also if you want to keep the factory unit there are kits out there that amplify the output voltage.
well the amp is very efficient and all but I have it on a 2 farad cap anyway. I wasn't really a hifonix fan whatsoever but I was pleased with the brutus 2000w I'm sure there are cheaper amps out there too..ie ebay and whatever...i'm just trying to help.
ok so, the only advise I have gotten so far is a Hifonix Brutus and a kicker zx1500.1
Is my best bet to go with the jl 1000/1 I have heard a 12w7 on an jl 500/1 and it was A LOT louder than my setup...
before this sub I had a re xxx which the tensils on the hot side broke.
So Basically here are my options. 1.) Get a new amp for the W7 ($600 ish) 2.) Get the xxx reconed (have a quote from fi audio to do the recone.)($180 after shipping) 3.) get another 1200d and bridge them together. ($150 used on e-bay) here is the box I built...its actually 2.15 ft^3 tuned to approx 31.25hz box is made of mdf with an oak veneer. My dad owns a millwork company so this was just some scrap wood.
A 500/1 will be underpowering slightly but it will still sound decent, although the 500/1 is better suited to the 10w7, the 1000/1 more for the 12 and 13. If I were you, i'd get a 1000/1 and if you have the space, you could go slightly bigger on the box.
The box is built exactly to the drawing above. As I said before my dad owns a woodshop and I had a professional build the box. There isn't a 1/32" difference from the above drawing. If someone could check the tuning that would be awesome.
I do think that it is the amp. I do not know for sure how much power the sub is getting or even how to measure the output of the amp. If I turn the gain up it gets loud but starts to distort.
well i dont really like jl myself, everyone else loves them so they must be pretty good, the thing is people say theyre spl subs, but i dont really hear them that way.
buy another amp, also make sure that your wiring is correct, because it sounds maybe that your ohms are off
'''I'd get JL/1000 amp for your 12W7 sub, end of story/problem. You have a quality sub, so purchase an amp that's of equal quality, not less (Hifonics).'''
