Bronze Member Username: Chriscf817TX Post Number: 16 Registered: Apr-07 | i just bought a ported enclosure for 2 kicker cvr's but wehn i hooked it up and everything only the higher notes sound loud while the deep bass that i was looking for sound like crap. i used to have them in a sealed box and i think they sounded way better than now. im disappointed but is there like a way to make the speakers hit the deep notes? like when i open the trunk they sound good but its when im inside the car that they sound weak |
Bronze Member Username: Bjfish11Garden Plain, KS USA Post Number: 37 Registered: Dec-06 | Where did you get the box? |
Bronze Member Username: Chriscf817TX Post Number: 17 Registered: Apr-07 | from an audio shop in my neighborhood |
Bronze Member Username: Bjfish11Garden Plain, KS USA Post Number: 38 Registered: Dec-06 | Is it a pre fab box? Or did they actually build it? Im guessing its tuned incredibly high. |
Gold Member Username: OlegSanta Monica, CA USA Post Number: 1261 Registered: Nov-04 | Yeah, Chris. To make it sound "good" and musical it needs to be around 34Hz. |
Bronze Member Username: Chriscf817TX Post Number: 18 Registered: Apr-07 | it was already made. they charge me like too much to make me a custom one |
Bronze Member Username: Bjfish11Garden Plain, KS USA Post Number: 39 Registered: Dec-06 | Im guessing its probably tuned in the mid 40's. As Oleq said, a good range is 30-35ish HZ. That could be a big reason your having a hard time hitting the low notes. |
Bronze Member Username: Chriscf817TX Post Number: 19 Registered: Apr-07 | how do i tune it to 34Hz? or i can't? |
Bronze Member Username: Bjfish11Garden Plain, KS USA Post Number: 41 Registered: Dec-06 | You really cant do anything about it now. If you dont mind, how much did you pay for the box, and how much did they want for a custom box? |
Bronze Member Username: Chriscf817TX Post Number: 20 Registered: Apr-07 | i paid 35 for it and they guy said for a custom they'll charge me like 300 |
Bronze Member Username: Bjfish11Garden Plain, KS USA Post Number: 42 Registered: Dec-06 | At least you didnt spend too much on it. |
Bronze Member Username: Chriscf817TX Post Number: 21 Registered: Apr-07 | yeah |
Gold Member Username: Nyyfan13Fi SSD USA Post Number: 4959 Registered: Jul-06 | can you build your own? |
Gold Member Username: OlegSanta Monica, CA USA Post Number: 1262 Registered: Nov-04 | Believe it or not, but $300 is what you pay for a good custom box - if you think about it, if you're spending cake no subs amps, you need to finish the project well and get the right box as that is the determining factor in how well the subs will sound. Any sub can sound like crap in a crappy box. There're a few ppl on this forum that build boxes - Marks Potts and Logan. I doubt you'll be able to find a good custom box for less than $200. My box is $260. |

Gold Member Username: OlegSanta Monica, CA USA Post Number: 1267 Registered: Nov-04 | Looks like it's 4 cu ft altogether. That box should be just right for 2 CVRs assuming cutout diameter matches and it fits in your car. |

Bronze Member Username: Chriscf817TX Post Number: 28 Registered: Apr-07 | what if i like make the opening in the middle more narrow by like blockin some of it with a piece of board? would that work too? |
Gold Member Username: OlegSanta Monica, CA USA Post Number: 1270 Registered: Nov-04 | It looks like it'll fit because it's shorter, but longer. Chris, take your trunk opening dimensions and Logan, get him the box dimensions. |
Bronze Member Username: Chriscf817TX Post Number: 29 Registered: Apr-07 | yeah im sort of a mustang guy too, i use to be into those lil rice burners but i got over those. |
Gold Member Username: OlegSanta Monica, CA USA Post Number: 1272 Registered: Nov-04 | Doesn't the length of the port change the tuning frequency? If I'm right, you won't be able to change it. |
Bronze Member Username: Chriscf817TX Post Number: 30 Registered: Apr-07 | the only way a box that long will fit will be if its short enough to fit from the inside of the car where the back seats fold down. it will be impossible to get anything that long thru the normal trunk opening. |
Bronze Member Username: Chriscf817TX Post Number: 31 Registered: Apr-07 | ok so what if i extend the port length inside the box. will that work? or is there like no possible way? |
Gold Member Username: Tremor1127Fi Car Audio has got m... Post Number: 1434 Registered: Aug-06 | what if i like make the opening in the middle more narrow by like blockin some of it with a piece of board? would that work too? yeah, that would probably have some results. or take and add a little bit to the walls on the inside and kinda angle the piece you add towards the back wall making the tunnel abit narrow, it would give it almost a horn effect... oleg says you wont be able to change the tuning freq maybe, i dont know, i would try stuff just cause i would be in the same boat as you, i wouldnt know what to do but i have a big shop... |

Post Number: 1436 Registered: Aug-06 | double post FTMFW! either way though, i believe there would be some results if you did some changing to the port because it simply wouldnt be the same port anymore, it would almost have to have SOME kind of results. |
Gold Member Username: Tremor1127Fi Car Audio has got m... Post Number: 1437 Registered: Aug-06 | "ok so what if i extend the port length inside the box. will that work? or is there like no possible way?" sure, just measure and very carefully put the pieces in there and glue and secure with screws and silicone. in other words, do it right... how much to add, i have no clue, i cant even design a ported enclosure from scratch, much less tune an already tuned one... |
Bronze Member Username: Chriscf817TX Post Number: 32 Registered: Apr-07 | yeah i'll try something like that. hopefully i dont end up ruining it |
Gold Member Username: OlegSanta Monica, CA USA Post Number: 1273 Registered: Nov-04 | I think making the port longer will tune it even higher, but don't quote me on that. |
Bronze Member Username: Chriscf817TX Post Number: 33 Registered: Apr-07 | so do u suggest a wider opening? like does more airflow = higher tuned and less airflow = lower tuned or is it the other way around? |

Bronze Member Username: Bjfish11Garden Plain, KS USA Post Number: 46 Registered: Dec-06 | These calculations are assuming the port area remains constant... If you lengthen the port, the tuning will decrease. If you shorten the port, the tuning will go up. |
