Alright i tried to set my gain today...

I turned all my eq's off. I turned HU to 3/4 of volume and gain down. I got a DMM and set it to the 200~ setting. I played a 50hz tone. I may be dumb or something but wut do i do next. I put the positive wire from the DMM on the positive post on the amp. I put the negitive wire from the DMM to the negitive post on the amp. When i did this my subwoofer was still connected...does this matter? Anyway when i put the DMM on it only registered to like 5 on he DMM. Help plz.

alright so i did it. on my HU i have bass setting i put to zero. i turned off the "loud" setting. on amp i turned off bass boost. the only thing is on my HU i have something called subwoofer level and on 0 nothing goes to amp and on 8 its all the way up. I set it when it was on 8. Is that what i was sposed to do?

Ah ha that's the problem...... you want the sub level all the way up when setting the gain. If you set the gain with it turned down, the amp would clip when you turn it and the volume up.

Oh wait, I misread that..... you did set it with it all the way up? You should be good to go then......

ya i left it all the way up. one last thing...

also when i set it the bass boost on my amp i set at about 5. when i pu tit on 0 i only got up to 27volts and i need 31. When i put my bass boost on 5 (out of 10) the gain was about 3/4 of the way up. As long as i dont turn up the bass boost any more and i leave it at 5 from now on i should be fine...right?

That doesn't sound right......

- What amp is it?
- What HU?
- What ohms is the amp run at?

Well that HU only has 2 volt outputs (not so great), but something doesn't seem right here.

You say you turned the gain all the way up and still only got 27 volts? Are you sure the test tone is good, not an attenuated tone? That amp doesn't have a high/low switch for the gain anywhere does it?

May I suggest trying this tone just to make sure that's not the problem:

(right-click and save target as)

Ok I just watched the video. First of all loudness should be OFF.

Next, did you try turning the gain up more than 3/4 instead of adding bass boost? Cause with a 2 volt HU you're gonna have to turn it up pretty far, but you should never have to add BB to get the gain set right.

^^^ Never mind that last part you said VOLUME was at 3/4.

It looks like you're doing everything right.

Except for the loudness. Turn that off and try it again.

If it still don't work right, then I'll start to wonder if that amp doesn't do it's rated power?

well i still have stock alt and batt but it must put out close to the rated power cuz it does make the subs move full extension when the volume isnt all the way up. I have 2 SD2.5s

Definitely have it off when setting the gain, and I don't personally use it anytime. All it does is boost the bass and treble while leaving the midrange unchanged. If a system needs tuning, I use an EQ.

Wouldnt you set everything on your head unit first and then tune your gain so you dont clip your sub????

No. You shouldn't be using bass boost or anything after the gain is set. The sub level on the HU should be all the way up, so that you can turn the sub down when you want, but not turn it up into clipping.

Then, if the system needs tuning, it should be EQ'd by first cutting certain frequencies, then boosting other if that is not enough.

I don't get how people can install systems without even owning a DMM, lol. But you can get them for about $20 at any walmart or hardware store.

1994 Chevy S10 Blazer. SUV really, but I call the old ones trucks cause they basically are an S series tuck with the back closed in. 4WD FTW (we need it in the winter in PA)

It looks kinda like this, except it is a 4 door, the 4 door ones are longer. Not an actual pic of mine:
