You can't have both if you don't have the power. Turning the gains up clips the signal and then melts your coils...eventually you'll be subless (maybe ampless too). So either you get some more bass and melt your subs or have little bass now, get a bigger amp, and have more bass later.

Gain is NOT a volume control

Set it properly and you won't have any problems:

ok, i see what you mean, but if i have my speakers set up like this...
http://www.cardomain.com/shop/wooferwizard.pl?num_of_subs=2&impedance_of_subs=2o hm_dvc&x=130&y=11
what number of (ohms) would that be?

The diagram on that page doesn't load. BTW if your ground's not connected or has a bad connection, it'll burn. What gauge wire are you using? That can burn too. Brand of subs and amp?

It's most likely the voice coils burning due to clipping. He said it was coming from the subs.

Nope, doesn't tell me anything. Do you still the box or the order form for the subs? It should say there. If you can't tell, give me the complete model number and I'll tell you.

Now, this may potentially be the problem. How EXACTLY are your subs wired? Parallel/parallel, or series/parallel?

it is a 4ohm sub...
and i have it set up like option 2, option one my amp turned off...
http://www.cardomain.com/shop/wooferwizard.pl?num_of_subs=2&impedance_of_subs=4o hm_dvc&x=150&y=14
im guessing i dont have enough amp pushing them both?
and another question...would that amp be too much to just push one?

The amp spec says it puts out 700W rms @ 4ohms, that's 350W to each woofer, which is just fine. I'm not sure what it could be
M.S., got any insight on it? If everything's as he says it is, then he shouldn't be frying the woofers.

Did he ever set his gain properly? If not, that's the problem. Do this:

i have the gain at .5
if i go higher the bass fades...
would it be too much to try and push one woofer witht this amp?

Dude, I don't know how to make this any clearer:

***** SET YOUR GAIN PROPERLY ******

.5 is WAY too high. Almost every HU has a minimum of 2 volt outputs, most have 4 or 5 volts. You may have already damaged the subs from having it cranked up, that's the only thing I can see that could be wrong here.

Yes, that's why they're frying. Setting gain to 0.5V means the amplifier expects 0.5V signal, which is weak, so it tries to compensate. Your HU is probably a 4V deck, so you need to set the gain to that and not any further. If you're not getting enough "bump," you need a bigger amp and preferrably one that's 1ohm stable. The amp's too much for one woofer, but it should work better without frying it - turn the gain down just so you don't fry the sub this time.

i put in your numbers on the site: 700W into 4ohms; target voltage was 52.9V. Steps 1 through 7 describe the process pretty well, you'll need a DMM. I'm about to get one and I suggest you do too, it's a small investment compared to the number of woofers you may be frying. I believe if you probe the speaker outputs of the amp, you'll need to adjust the gain until you're at 52.9V.
