I was playing my music and my bass went away. I check all the wires and they seem to be plugged in right. I remove the 15XXX and replace it with a JLw6. The w6 plays perfectly fine does that mean I blew my XXX?? How can I check???
usually when you fry a VC it doesnt just stop as if you unplugged somehting from a socket. woofercooker has a good idea about checking the tinsel leads. a sure way to check the VCs is using a dmm though. if you dont have one bring it to an auto parts store and see if they will hook one up to it real quick.
Chad see that's what i thought if i blew the sub some sound should still come out. The sub was remove last night. The VC look fine and if i press down on the sub its soft like before.
Ive done this a few times and every time it ended up being the tinsel leads. The tinsels may look fine, but still can be the problem.
Clipping and over excursion will cause the leads to fry. Some times they come disconnected and other times they begin to break down. A tinsel lead is a bunch of woven wires and sometimes a number of the wires will break enough to cause a falty connection.
I have a JL Audio W3 with a tinsel lead broke and I was told it has to be reconed because they connect directly to the VC and it will have to come completely apart to fix. If someone can fix it let me know so I can get mine fixed.
If this turns out to be your problem(im 95% sure thats what it is),it can be repaired. Depending on were the tinsel went bad, it could be an easy fix or it may need to be reconed. If the tinsel is broken or worn at the terminal, most of the time it can be re-soldered. If its broken at the voice coil, it will need a recone.
on my friends sub it broke on the coil, if you dont care how your sub looks, you can break off the dustcap and solder it back on... but you really cant do it unless your pretty good with a soldering iron.
