When I removed the subs to re-cox my new sealed box that i recently bought I found a ton of cotton in it. I've never heard of putting cotton in the box before, what dose it do?

its called polyfil...or should be polyfil tho other types of 'cotton' will do such as the stuff thats in ur pillow (thats what i had as a ghetto rig lol)

it basically makes ur sub hit harder....sorta tells ur sub that there is more room than there actually is in the box...

That's called damping. It's used to compensate box volume shortcomings. It absorbs sound thus increasing the "preceived" volume of the box. I've used carpet padding in my speaker enclosures with great results. Cheap too.

just to clarify it doesn't "absorb" sound it just merly slows down the sound waves, which makes the sub think its in a bigger box.

"Adding Poly-fill in this case will give you a little deeper bass, but may slightly decrease your power-handling capability"-crutchfield.com

does this mean that i will lose spl when it says "power-handling"?

It makes the enclosure function as if it were larger than it actually is. So if your box is too small for subs, mainly because of lack of space, you can put that material in the box to make it seem bigger for the sub.
