Silver Member Username: OlegSanta Monica, CA USA Post Number: 727 Registered: Nov-04 | That's a good choice. What would be perfect for you is Orion HCCA-D2400. Rated exactly 1200W rms into 1ohm. Just over $300 shipped on eBay. Excellent amp. |

Silver Member Username: ClouduzPost Number: 148 Registered: Jun-06 | ok sorry didn't mean to hijack your thread but i just purchased the hifonics BXi 1606D and i was told on this forum it does 80% of it's power (wishing it was 100%) i'm really bad at math so how much is 80% of it's power at 2 ohms? |

Platinum Member Username: GlasswolfWisteria, Lane USA Post Number: 11779 Registered: Dec-03 | why exactly do you need that much power? I'd rather get a little less power and more quality than the other way around, but that's me. I'm an old man. keep in mind though, that extra 300 watts will barely make a difference in audible volume, if any at all. It takes [double] the power to increase audible volume by +3dB, which is considered an audible increase in volume. You'd need fully six to ten times the power to double the audible volume, which is an increase of +6 to +10dB. (remember the decibel isn't a linear scale, so 6dB isn't double 3dB) My point is, demanding 1500 watts instead of 1200 won't make any big difference. |

Silver Member Username: KillswitchjdPost Number: 378 Registered: Apr-06 | amp guts... i was trying to think what site that was on. nice, thanks for all the posts. Ben, it really depends on what brand you have. I want to avoid hifonics, because I think directed is a better brand. Im not looking to buy right now, so im not going to email either of you. Just trying to make my final picks on my new setup the directed amp has 120 amps for fuses. |
Silver Member Username: KillswitchjdPost Number: 379 Registered: Apr-06 | does anyone have a table to show how much the db increase will be compared to watts or compared amps? all I know is the volts x amps =watts, i dont know much about actual db increase when it comes to power |
Silver Member Username: KillswitchjdPost Number: 380 Registered: Apr-06 | take the difference between 4 x 40A Sundown Audio SAZ-1500D 1500x1 rms at 1 ohm compared to the 3 x 40A Directed d2400 1200x1 rms at 1 ohm what would be the approximate db increase from one of these amps to the other assuming similar efficiency? |
Platinum Member Username: GlasswolfWisteria, Lane USA Post Number: 11787 Registered: Dec-03 | take a look at this link for power to volume ratios: http://users.chariot.net.au/~gmarts/amppower.htm also, don't go strictly by fuse ratings. fuses aren't a hard set number.. meaning a 40A fuse doesn't pop the instant it sees 40A or more of current. The way fuse ratings work is based on % of overcurrent and duration of said overcurrent.. so the higher the % of overcurrent, the shorter the fuse duration will be. Because of this, some companies actually use smaller fuse ratings than what their advertised power output should suggest, because they figure it's safer, and you won't blow the fuses because you'll only hit those peaks momentarily due to the nature of music and the reactive load of the speakers connected to that amp. more on fuse ratings can be read here: http://www.bcae1.com/fuses.htm |
