I think they are considered SQL subs because they aren't fully SQ or SPL subs.. so they are a combination of them. Also, your box is not an SPL box unless it is tuned high for spl, which it is not.
I think of ported boxes like this: Retain SQ, louder, and bring out the lows. Its a win win win situation. (minus space)
