Hello, Im new here, I have a question that has prolly been asked a million times but here it is anyways, I have a 1999 Tahoe z71 and I just bought two 12" Type R's last night, and I need to find the right mono amp to power these, I currently have a new Alpine MRP-M850
Mono subwoofer amplifier. I dont believe this will be enough power to run both 12's can you guys give me some imput on a proper amp that will push these subs in a sealed or ported box.
Thanks Chris

what are the vc of the subs? depending on that you'll want to look for an amp that'll do about 1200-1600wrms at the load you need.

Someone suggested that I might look into a 2 channel amp instead of a mono amp, oh by the way I just returned the Alpine MRP-M850 back to the store, seeing that this amp will not be sufficient to run both subs.

the pdx 1.1000 will but out 1000 rms...and that is under rated...it will put out about 1100 watts rms. I actually have a pdx 1.1000 hooked upto two alpine type R subs. And man do they pound!!!

He's got the dual 4 ohm subs, and that's not a 1ohm stable amp.

it is a two channel amp...look at the pics. it has two channels and it will put out about 1100 watts rms at both four ohm and at two ohm
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-iNCiQPanKDV/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=120&tab=morephot os&pi=1&i=500PDX1100&display=L#Tab follow that link..it shows two channels on the amp

With my setup i have each sub wired to each channel and it pushes them just fine

Im back home from work now, ok theres some good imput here, I will prolly run both subs @ 2 ohm because finding a amp that runs stable at 1 ohm is difficult to find, the subs normally are dual voice at 4 ohm. Im trying to get the most out of these subs with out frying an amp. So is a 2 channel amp out of the question?, and I guess what i need is to find a amp that will run
1000-1500 rms per sub.
Thanks

that is alot of power to put to each sub...with that much power it is alot easier to blow your speakers...for that kinda power i would say Hifonics... just my opinion

You should go with the Hifonics BXi1606D
1100 watts rms x1ch @ 2 ohms

Is that per sub or does that get broken down to 500 rms after you bridge to 2 ohms? Im still learning the lingo here sorry..

What Corey and me described is only one channel...so that would be for only one sub...but both of those amps go down to 1 ohm. so you could wire your subs to get the max out of either of those amps.

The amp Corey said about will put out 1600watts rms @ 1 ohm...800 for each speaker

The amp i described will put out 2000 watts rms @ 1 ohm...1000 watts for each speaker

If the information is correct below from crutchfield, then the actual rms to 2 subs @ 2 ohm would be 500 rms per sub

Details:
» mono subwoofer amplifier
» 1,000 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms
(1,000 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms)

I guess running at 2ohm it would be cooler on the amp instead of running it at 1 ohm each, is either one of those amps you mentioned run stable at 1 ohm?

the amps that we mention earlier will run at 1 ohm.

And the link that you have is actually the amp i was recommending...that amp will do exactly what you want it to

long thread

but simply
if u have 2 dual 4ohms subs then get a good amp that does about 1200wrms @ 1 ohm

if ur subs r dual 2 then 1200wrms @ 2ohms

those type Rs will handle 600 each comfortably

though u can use a 2 chan amp - a monoblock is prefered for subs ....

That's not a 2 channel amp, nor is it a 2000 watt amp. It's 1000W. And it's not a 1 ohm stable amp. It'd still work for him because it'll still do 1000 watts at 4 ohms, but if you wired that thing at 1 ohm you're just gonna burn it up. And having 2 speaker outputs doesn't make it a 2 channel amp. It says right on it that it's a mono amp, the two outputs would just be parallel connections. And even if it was a 2 channel, you'd bridge it anyways with subs. Unless you were a dufus and ran your subs in stereo

Man im getting some good ideas here, thanks to you guys, its been a long time since I was into car stereos actually its been since 1985 since I had my last stereo competition, I placed 1st in the loudness category hitting 148.1db in a 1982 camaro, but that was along time ago! things have changed so much in design and competition, Im married now for 16 years and 3 kids later, and I have found new love again for my stereo (I know that sounds silly for a 42 year old), but, this is just another way to keep holding on to my youth..lol.
Thanks again everyone for the superb advice !!!
