i have a CDX-L600X cd receiver and it has a preamp and i dont know what it is. can anyone tell me what it is and what it is for.

The preamp is for your speakers, if you want to hook an amp up to your speakers, to get better highs and mids, instead of using the built in amp on the deck, you would use the preamp.
