Hey guys, does the jensen VM93311TS have a dimmer function that will dim the display when the lcd is retracted for night driving? I know how to dim the lcd. I might be overlooking this function. The bright blue screen is kind of annoying. Thanks

Other than taping a piece of white paper over the display, to shun some of the blindness affect, does anyone have any ideas? I am mechanically inclined. i have located the wire from the vehicle dimmer that dims the dash lights.

The deck itself does not have a wire to dim the lights along with your dash lights.

So with that in mind, you're SOL.

I use mine with the screen open at night without any problems.

Why not just reduce the LCD brightness at night if it's a major problem for you?

Yea, that's my final option. I have dimmed the lcd already. Ive "heard" that it's illegal to have the lcd out while driving even if you aren't watching a movie. Not sure if it's true. I installed it in an 18 wheeler so i guess when i go through the truck weigh stations or when i get pulled over for random roadside checks, i have to retract the screen.

In California it's illegal to have any video playback in view of the driver. The vehicle code is a lot more detailed, but that's the gist of it.

I don't know what the laws in your area are, but here in California it's perfectly legal to use a deck with an LCD as long as it doesn't have any video playing. Think about all the cars that come from the factory now with LCD's for radio, CD, and GPS.

Since you're riding high, I would just retract the screen as you said for roadside checks.

If you find out anymore information about the legality of LCD's in your area I'd be curious to hear about it.

Good luck! :-)

Here's the full California vehicle code regarding "TV's" for your reading pleasure:

27602. (a) A person may not drive a motor vehicle if a television
receiver, a video monitor, or a television or video screen, or any
other, similar means of visually displaying a television broadcast or
video signal that produces entertainment or business applications,
is operating and is located in the motor vehicle at any point forward
of the back of the driver's seat, or is operating and visible to the
driver while driving the motor vehicle.
(b) Subdivision (a) does not apply to the following equipment when
installed in a vehicle:
(1) A vehicle information display.
(2) A global positioning display.
(3) A mapping display.
(4) A visual display used to enhance or supplement the driver's
view forward, behind, or to the sides of a motor vehicle for the
purpose of maneuvering the vehicle.
(5) A television receiver, video monitor, television or video
screen, or any other, similar means of visually displaying a
television broadcast or video signal, if that equipment has an
interlock device that, when the motor vehicle is driven, disables the
equipment for all uses except as a visual display as described in
paragraphs (1) to (4), inclusive.
(6) A mobile digital terminal installed in a vehicle owned or
operated by an electrical corporation, as defined in Section 218 of
the Public Utilities Code, a local publicly owned electric utility,
as defined in Section 9604 of that code, a gas corporation, as
defined in Section 222 of that code, or a telephone corporation, as
defined in Section 234 of that code, if the mobile digital terminal
is fitted with an opaque covering that does not allow the driver to
view any part of the display while driving, even though the terminal
may be operating.
(c) Subdivision (a) does not apply to a mobile digital terminal
installed in an authorized emergency vehicle or to a motor vehicle
providing emergency road service or roadside assistance.
(d) Subdivision (a) does not apply to a mobile digital terminal
installed in a vehicle owned or operated by an electrical
corporation, as defined in Section 218 of the Public Utilities Code,
a local publicly owned electric utility, as defined in Section 9604
of that code, a gas corporation, as defined in Section 222 of that
code, or a telephone corporation, as defined in Section 234 of that
code, when the vehicle is deployed in an emergency to respond to an
interruption or impending interruption of electrical, natural gas, or
telephone service.

Yea like i said, it was hear say. Im in VA. As of right now, im not even the least bit worried about the laws. As a matter of fact, i saw a cop the earlier today playing with his laptop driving down the interstate. He almost side swiped my rig. As long as i can keep it undercontrol while im driving, it shouldn't really be an issue. but hey, thanks again.
