Silver Member Username: Nyyfan13VA USA Post Number: 282 Registered: Jul-06 | how big of a difference, in loudness, is it gonna be if i put my sub in a sealed box instead of a ported. i know it wont be as loud but i can probably figure out how to build a sealed box but im not so confident building a legit ported box. i really want a ported box but if its gonna save me $200 to build a sealed box then thats straight with me. also, how hard is it to build a good ported box? thanks sorry if this post shows up twice, i did not see the first one. |

FIRST OF ALL ITS NOT GUNNA TAKE 200 BUCKS TO BUILD A PORTED box(sry caps) and second of all it is fairly easy to build one down load winISD(google it to find it) and tht program will help u the bast.. and the difference decible wise is normally 3dbs but u can get louder if to properly to incorporate ur car resosnant frequency.... but u can tune it wut u desire(30-35 good for lows; 35-40 decent sq and gets louder :o, and 40-45 with sum subs will still have monsterous output will sum whut decent sq; and 45-above id say strictly comps....) and it is not hard at all to build a box REMEMBER: its not rocket science its car audio |

Gold Member Username: FrkkevinLake Worth, Texas US Post Number: 1143 Registered: Nov-05 | ported boxes are a lot easier than you may think.. the only hard part is determining what requency you want to tune to but everyone here can help you... give us measurements and the subs you want to use and we can help you with a ported design.. or you can use this site.. http://www.subwoofertools.com/forum/ported-box.asp? ported over sealed normally gives 3dB gain .. either box would cost the same to build if ou do it youself seeing you can only buy mdf by the 4x8 sheet |
Silver Member Username: Nyyfan13VA USA Post Number: 283 Registered: Jul-06 | alrite, let me clear it up actually. when i say "its gonna save me $200" i was referring to i was gonna have this installer build me the ported box becuase i didnt think i cuold do it but i was sure i could build a selaed box. and HE was gonna charge me $200 to build it for me. i know if i built it myslef itd be a whole lot cheaper.i hope i cleared that up and im sorry if my quesiotn was misleading. |
Silver Member Username: Nyyfan13VA USA Post Number: 284 Registered: Jul-06 | i wanted a 2.5 cuft ported box tuned to about 32 hz. single 12" Fi SSD. i dont know the exact dimensions of my trunk, but its a small hatcback (scion tc) |

Silver Member Username: Nyyfan13VA USA Post Number: 290 Registered: Jul-06 | ok so my box size would be a 2.1 cuft box? that correct? and i just checked the dimensions and they will work in the back so we're good there. |
Gold Member Username: FrkkevinLake Worth, Texas US Post Number: 1150 Registered: Nov-05 | and yes.. it would be 2.1cu.ft .. that is after displacement of the port and sub .. i figured that would be fine seeing its about middle of the specs provided from Fi |
Silver Member Username: Nyyfan13VA USA Post Number: 291 Registered: Jul-06 | also would this be what my box would look like of am i imagining it wrong? and yea i stole these pics from muddys system so thanks muddy. but is this what my box will resemble? |
Silver Member Username: Nyyfan13VA USA Post Number: 293 Registered: Jul-06 | and yea i got no problem with 2.1, i just wanted to make sure i knew what was going on. |
Gold Member Username: FrkkevinLake Worth, Texas US Post Number: 1151 Registered: Nov-05 | similar yes.. if you want to get the loudest i'd fire the sub up and the port back .. i did not design a long port to fit on the bottom of the box because it would prolly not be very wide .. placement is up to you... whichever you find easier |
Silver Member Username: Nyyfan13VA USA Post Number: 294 Registered: Jul-06 | also, my dimensions u gave me were 16 30 14 is that 16 height, 30 wide, and 14 deep? or 14 height, 30 wide, and 16 deep? thanks for the help |
Gold Member Username: DrivingrecklessNear tampa, Florida United state... Post Number: 1964 Registered: Apr-06 | sub up ports back only works for SUVs or so ive herd.... |
Gold Member Username: FrkkevinLake Worth, Texas US Post Number: 1152 Registered: Nov-05 | 16Hx30Wx14D |
Silver Member Username: Nyyfan13VA USA Post Number: 295 Registered: Jul-06 | alrite good deal. the height fits in with about 4 inches to spare with the trunk cloed so we're good. thanks |
Silver Member Username: Nyyfan13VA USA Post Number: 296 Registered: Jul-06 | the box will resemeble muddys up there and if i dont like how it sounds firing towards the rear of my car, can i just flip it up shooting up towards the roof? or is that just dumb? |
Gold Member Username: FrkkevinLake Worth, Texas US Post Number: 1155 Registered: Nov-05 | flip it however which may you think it sounds better.. reason i say it would be louder if you built if with the sub on top and the port on the side firing towards the back is because that scion is like a mini-suv of sort.. either way its going to sound good. i'd do whatever you were comfortable with. if you don't like it you can always build a new one later on down the road |
Gold Member Username: CtmikeCt. Post Number: 1953 Registered: Feb-06 | i would never fire the sub up in a car. you think you have rattles now, wait till the sub is facing up, it'll be so much worse and it wont even sound good. just keep it firing to the back, best way in a car. |
Gold Member Username: CtmikeCt. Post Number: 1954 Registered: Feb-06 | ignore that^^, skipped right over you saying you got a hatchback. |
Silver Member Username: Nyyfan13VA USA Post Number: 300 Registered: Jul-06 | yep and i just posted something but it got deleted. so i think ill make it and then go and listen to it the different ways and decide which is the better soiunding way |

Silver Member Username: Nyyfan13VA USA Post Number: 302 Registered: Jul-06 | also, ive heard that u use 3/4" mdf i believe it is called to build the box out of. what does mdf stand for? and i do wanna use this correct? and ill probably be bulding it this weekend hopefully altho ill be ordering the sub this weekend as well so expect pics of the box this weekend with no sub. |
Gold Member Username: FrkkevinLake Worth, Texas US Post Number: 1161 Registered: Nov-05 | medium density fibreboard.. and yes 3/4" MDF is ideal for box making. looking forward to those pics |
Silver Member Username: Nyyfan13VA USA Post Number: 303 Registered: Jul-06 | this is my first box as you can tell so hopefully things work out for me. how much of the mdf should i buy? |
Gold Member Username: FrkkevinLake Worth, Texas US Post Number: 1162 Registered: Nov-05 | sigh.. this is what i get for waking up and posting lol .. ignore the vent parts for making the port on that box.. make one L port 2 inches wide .. first piece will be 12 inches long.. then the second piece to make the L would be 14.25 inches long.. make sure the port is 2 inches wide the hole length when your putting it together.. if you want to fire the sub up and port back you can use the original design.. thats the only way that port would fit |
Silver Member Username: Nyyfan13VA USA Post Number: 304 Registered: Jul-06 | ok kevin, im sorry to wake you up but can you give me your email address cause i believe i justc created what u just described on microsoft powerpoint and i want you to look at it and tell me if got everything correct on it. i wont be on anymore tonite once i send it so if u could reveiew it sometime tonite or tomorrow and let me know in an email or on here id greatly appreciate it. |

Silver Member Username: HockeyknightPost Number: 392 Registered: Apr-06 | hey yanks good luck with that box!!! i just built my first ported box and it was a piece of cake! took about 3 hours (THANKS BASSMAN!!!) but just take ur time, pre drill every hole real good and get some elmers probond glue(worked great for me) |
Silver Member Username: Nyyfan13VA USA Post Number: 306 Registered: Jul-06 | congrats on ur box and thanks. |

Gold Member Username: FrkkevinLake Worth, Texas US Post Number: 1168 Registered: Nov-05 | np.. looking forward to pics .. take your time and pre-drill each hole well.. make sure to glue all the joints well too. its best to piece the box together after you have everything cut to make sure it looks ok.. better to find out if something needs to be cut then rather than trying to do it when its attached to other pieces of wood already |
