I was going to run a wire from my HU to near my amp (common Ground) and was wondering if using a larger gauge wire is okay? Ive read tons of stuff about keeping the ground wire the same as the power but does it matter if larger?

Unless your device requires high current, it'll make no difference.
If you have the money and space, use larger gauge wire.
