For those with limited room (ext. cab truck) what options do I have?

New member Username: MhrxHayden, ID USA Post Number: 5 Registered: Aug-04 | Hi everyone, I just got a 98 Tacoma SR5 extended cab, and I'm wondering what do do about a sound system. I want access to the back seats, which leaves me with very limited room. It looks like I can fit an 8", maybe a 10" under the rear passenger seat, but it is kind of a strange shaped compartment. I have roughly 4-5" of depth to work with. My question is, is it possible to have a good sounding system with a single 8" or 10" sub? Or am I just going to have to bite the bullet and put a subwoofer on top of the rear seats? I would appreciate any comments on what other people with limited space have done, and how it sounds. thanks for the help! |

I'm thinking I can fit one in each compartment, though the driver side might be a little tricky. If I wanted to mount these myself, could I use something to fill in the subs? (like a foam type thing?) Or is that even possible. I know very little about getting the best sound out of an enclosure |

USA Post Number: 1020 Registered: Apr-05 | If I were you, and it sounds like you dont want to give up the rear seat or other available space, then I would go for the Kicker Comp VR 8". This would give you some bass, not much, but some. It would actually fill the cab with lower and more bass than you might get from a "few" 6X9's. |

I have a lot to learn on subwoofer enclosing, I've been looking for hours, but do know of a place that could explain this to me? Is building a box for my truck doable for a beginner? I wouldn't want distorted sound. Or would I be better off spending the 180 bucks and not having to worry about it? I'm just thinking that $180 for a single 8" sub is high, if I could install 2 8's for less doing it myself. Last question, I promise :D : If I did get the single 8" sub, would the sound improve dramatically with some good component speakers in the front? I mostly want rich sound, not as much as super loud. Thanks for all the help, wish I knew more and had less questions! |

Gold Member Username: MixneffectOrangevale, Ca. USA Post Number: 1023 Registered: Apr-05 | Ive been building boxes since 1987. The stealth box for your truck is not an easy box to build. It is a complex design due to the un-conventional shape. There are many angles. The angles are not easy angles either. They are quite complex to accomplish with simple basic tools of an average Joe. I am not saying that you can not do it, or that you do not have the tools to do it either. i am just saying this because most people do not have access to at least decent equipment to cut, build, and finish a box like the stealth box mentioned above. IMHO I would buy the stealth box and see how it suits my application. You may actually like the stealth box quite a bit and decide that you may want to build your own custom made box later. I would encourage you to try it first before you get involved in building your own custom (difficult) box. For a first time box I would recommend a simple rectangle sealed box. That stealth box, and some half way decent component set up front will give you a decent full, rich sound. Get a 300-400 watt amp that is tri-wirable and a decent deck. This budget/beginner setup will cost you about $700 - $1000. If you want to invest more, and decide you like this hobby, you should consider doing some reaserch before you invest in your "NEXT" project. Give this one a try. Believe me, you will not be laughed at. It will fill your cab with plenty sound for you while inside the cab. The next levels will be either higher quality parts, and/or louder. They will both cost considerably more. Probably $2000 - $5000. Its your call. $1000 or $5000?
