Gold Member Username: TdbdadrummerWellsburg, WV USA Post Number: 1474 Registered: Aug-05 | Sometimes port noise is increased when you use a tube/round port. It depends on the quality of the enclosure though, noise is usually only a factor on a cheaply made enclosure. I personally like round ports for home speakers, and slot ports for car audio useage. AKA my new car enclosure will have a slot port, and my CV V-12F's have dual 4" ports on each speaker lol. |
Gold Member Username: B101Queen City, NC USA Post Number: 1661 Registered: Sep-05 | slot passes considerable more amount of air, greatly reducing any noise what so ever. |
Gold Member Username: TdbdadrummerWellsburg, WV USA Post Number: 1482 Registered: Aug-05 | Still, the noise is based of the quality of the enclosure. I have a pair of cheapy Pioneer bookshelf speakers, and the round ports make all kind of racket, my CV's have the dual 4" ports, and make no noise at all! It's all on the build... |
Silver Member Username: Safe_crackerChicago, IL US Post Number: 397 Registered: Jan-06 | Tyler you are right, if is is designed properly with the right sized ports, port noise will be at a minimal. Slot porting works at a much smaller frequency band compared to round ports and if you use Aero's they will be louder then any other. Most port noise comes from when a port is too small for the driver, or enclosure volume causing increased velocity and with the sharp edges of the port catching the air causes noise, Aero ports eliminate this allowing a higher SPL capability. Oh, slot ports make noise too.Polo.. |

Gold Member Username: B101Queen City, NC USA Post Number: 1667 Registered: Sep-05 | yea any design can make noise, if designed incorrectly. Aero ports are the best I think! Also the loudest! |
Bronze Member Username: KickerandyVesta, MN America Post Number: 17 Registered: Mar-06 | what exactly is an aero port?? round or what??? |
Gold Member Username: 54danny54Betsy layne, Kentucky..GO... USA duh Post Number: 1979 Registered: Nov-04 | yea its round and from my understanding, its just flared, rather than have an edge like pvc |
Bronze Member Username: KickerandyVesta, MN America Post Number: 18 Registered: Mar-06 | so insead of jsut stopping, its kinda smooth lookin??and at the end it flares out???is that on the inside too? |
Gold Member Username: 54danny54Betsy layne, Kentucky..GO... USA duh Post Number: 1980 Registered: Nov-04 | not the inside but at both ends its flared for minumal port noise |
Bronze Member Username: KickerandyVesta, MN America Post Number: 19 Registered: Mar-06 | both ends???......could you make teh port or would u have to buy them??do u know a web site that i can go to taht will give me an example of the aero port?? |
Bronze Member Username: KickerandyVesta, MN America Post Number: 20 Registered: Mar-06 | both ends?? can i make the aero port or would i have to buy it??and is there a site i could go to that will give me an example of an aero port? |
Gold Member Username: 54danny54Betsy layne, Kentucky..GO... USA duh Post Number: 1981 Registered: Nov-04 | u could make one but i think it be kinda hard. |
Gold Member Username: TdbdadrummerWellsburg, WV USA Post Number: 1496 Registered: Aug-05 | Well, my friend has flared ports on his Audiobahn Bandpass setup (the one that's coated black with the flames and 800W RMS). It sounds like garbage...Plus he keeps the HPF on a lot, and it sounds worse. I had to ride with him today somewhere for like 30 minutes...It about killed me. |
Bronze Member Username: KickerandyVesta, MN America Post Number: 23 Registered: Mar-06 | ha so your saying dont get the flared ports??? |
Gold Member Username: TdbdadrummerWellsburg, WV USA Post Number: 1521 Registered: Aug-05 | No no, I'm saying prefabbed bandpass enclosures for the most part suck lol. Nothing to do with the port, just the enclosure design. |
Bronze Member Username: KickerandyVesta, MN America Post Number: 24 Registered: Mar-06 | haha ok, but what do u think, round or slot port what would be the best |
Gold Member Username: TdbdadrummerWellsburg, WV USA Post Number: 1522 Registered: Aug-05 | Slot porting is easier to design IMO. Both work well though. |
Bronze Member Username: KickerandyVesta, MN America Post Number: 25 Registered: Mar-06 | IMO???? whats that..........would i get the same loudness, and sound quality?? |
Gold Member Username: TdbdadrummerWellsburg, WV USA Post Number: 1525 Registered: Aug-05 | In My Opinion. Most likely. The differences would be subtle as long as port area is the same. |
Bronze Member Username: KickerandyVesta, MN America Post Number: 27 Registered: Mar-06 | ok, thanx alot, but another thing...does it matter where i put the port...like on the top or the side???? |
Gold Member Username: B101Queen City, NC USA Post Number: 1688 Registered: Sep-05 | yea port placement is critical.. when it comes to spl.. shooting ports backward and aimin subs upward is known as a CRX design... it yeilds the most output... |
Bronze Member Username: KickerandyVesta, MN America Post Number: 28 Registered: Mar-06 | so is the sub and port on oppisite side of the box??? and were u talkin about slotted or round?? round right? |
Bronze Member Username: KickerandyVesta, MN America Post Number: 29 Registered: Mar-06 | what should i tune it to......sumwhere around 30 - 35 Hz???? |
Silver Member Username: Safe_crackerChicago, IL US Post Number: 414 Registered: Jan-06 | External Aero ports boost SPL a bit more.(in background) |
Gold Member Username: B101Queen City, NC USA Post Number: 1691 Registered: Sep-05 | I was talkin about Aero ports, like what Polo got there... Ports facing toward trunk(back), subs firing upwards(top), yeilds the most SPL most of the time!! tune box around 30-35 for sound quality! 35-50 for pure spl, yeilds way louder score on mic! |
Gold Member Username: B101Queen City, NC USA Post Number: 1692 Registered: Sep-05 | here is a alot brighter pic of his box... |
Bronze Member Username: KickerandyVesta, MN America Post Number: 30 Registered: Mar-06 | if just put regular PCV pipe in my box do u think it would be good?? |
Gold Member Username: B101Queen City, NC USA Post Number: 1694 Registered: Sep-05 | PVC pipe can work, as long as its the correct length and diameter to match the box tuning freq. |
Bronze Member Username: KickerandyVesta, MN America Post Number: 31 Registered: Mar-06 | ya polo looks nice>>>>>>what is it......but i have a silverado, but ya i was goona go with PCV or slot port...... for size reasoning, would PCV be smaller.....probly ya, and do you get the same quality?? |
Silver Member Username: Jprix82Post Number: 338 Registered: Jan-06 | Is a CRX box just like a regular round port vented box but with the ports inside out? |
Gold Member Username: RovinTrinidad & T... Post Number: 6511 Registered: Jul-05 | pvc port calculator >>> http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/boxcalcs.asp |
Gold Member Username: B101Queen City, NC USA Post Number: 1700 Registered: Sep-05 | as long as any type of port is tuned to the same freq, its should yeild the same quality! slot port, is normally as long as the box itself.. a CRX box MUST have the subs facing upwards, pointing to the ceilng... the aero ports must be facing backwards, but some people have done it forwards. |
Silver Member Username: Jprix82Post Number: 339 Registered: Jan-06 | OK so lets say i have a regular areo ported box tuned to 35hz so if i fliped the ports inside out and pointed them backwards and the subs up i will have a CRX box? |
Gold Member Username: B101Queen City, NC USA Post Number: 1701 Registered: Sep-05 | yepp, it will also be louder too.. |
Silver Member Username: Safe_crackerChicago, IL US Post Number: 417 Registered: Jan-06 | Larger box+more ports+more frequency+more power= More louder, lol. B your right about the upward firing, rear port box but mostly in like Hatch backs and SUVs. In a trunk vehicle it tends to lose a little energy due to the flexing trunk lid. To gain the most enery possible from your ports I recommend them to be 90deg angle from the sub. I could run these ports internal with a small loss but it looks freaky for sure. Here is what Aero port ends look like. Polo.. |
Silver Member Username: Jprix82Post Number: 341 Registered: Jan-06 | will it be better for low tuned boxes? |
Bronze Member Username: KickerandyVesta, MN America Post Number: 32 Registered: Mar-06 | so how do you "tune a box" do u just set ur Hz level on your amp to what u want?? |
Silver Member Username: Safe_crackerChicago, IL US Post Number: 426 Registered: Jan-06 | Here is an example of the box B is talking about, I think....Polo.. |
Silver Member Username: Jprix82Post Number: 342 Registered: Jan-06 | will it be better for low tuned boxes? |
Silver Member Username: Jprix82Post Number: 343 Registered: Jan-06 | Hey B/Polo does CRX style box work good(louder) for low tuned boxes |
Bronze Member Username: NissankickerGrambling, LA USA Post Number: 13 Registered: Mar-06 | Me, personally, I'd go with a slotted port... tubes don't blow as hard... make it tuned at 30hz-40hz.. @ 1.5 - 2.3 cubes... |
Gold Member Username: B101Queen City, NC USA Post Number: 1735 Registered: Sep-05 | hell yea... man, the CRX box I heard shook the inside of my head, that how freaking lOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWwww it was man! but that was a KILLER system! 4 TSX 15s, 10 Aero ports, with covers to change tuning.. it was SICKKKKK slotted is nice, but my next box is going to be Aero ported low, like 28-30.. I just loved how that thing sounded. and if u think Aero dont push out as much air, then u wrong.... |
Bronze Member Username: NissankickerGrambling, LA USA Post Number: 15 Registered: Mar-06 | I just don't like tubes... They remind me of a freakin' Bandpass box... you know! the faggit one's w/ the Plexiglass like crap in the front! HAHAHAH! |
Silver Member Username: Safe_crackerChicago, IL US Post Number: 427 Registered: Jan-06 | Then you will always be that person in front of me wondering "who's playing all over my sounds", lol.. Polo.. |
